Sometimes I wish I went to school for product design but I do have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This allows me pick up pretty much any CAD program and design something. I love seeing a design I conceived manifest to the physical world. I do own a small hobby laser cutter. The laser cutter does have its limitations, but I find it fun to design around those limitations. I always have a bunch of ideas brewing in my head but it seems almost impossible for me to find the time to work on them.
