Vanishing Portrait Series: The Ghost, The Label, The Identity

その他
The Vanishing Portrait is a series of interactive videos that conceptually focus on racism in social media and image-labelling systems. Each video comments on a specific bias and explores the racism that is embedded into the software and programs of our social technologies.

"The Identity" shows a video of an Asian model. The public is invited to visit this website page: https://vanishingportrait.com/google/ and click on the button titled, “Google Asian Girls” This will automatically direct them to the Google search of “Asian Girls”. There, the participant will see how the search “Asian Girls”  brings up pornographic material.  Each time a viewer clicks this button, a screen shot of the Google search will appear on the screen. After thousands of visitors, the screen will be covered with these tiny images.

"The Label" shows an African American model. The public is invited to access their Instagram account and tag a photo “#vanishingportrait”. Each time a viewer hashtags this, the text “#vanishingportrait” will appear on the screen. After thousands of participants, the screen will be completely covered in these hashtags, turning the screen almost completely black.

The Ghost shows a video of a light skinned model. The public is invited to interact with the screen. Using Google AI, a camera will detect the presence of a person and will reduce the opacity of the image on the screen. After thousands of participants, the image will disappear, leaving only an empty white screen.
