The Potential of Bio Textile Design for Protection

Please describe the concept of your artwork in 1000 words.
The aim of my graduate project is to design a textile that can protect both human health and nature.
The title of my project is ‘An Exploration into the Potential of Biological Textile Design for Protection Against Threats to Human Health from External Environment(s)’.
About the inspiration of the project, the COVIED-19 epidemic we are experiencing really inspired me. It hurts us both physically and psychologically, and made me start thinking the relationship between humans and nature. I understood the epidemic as a backlash from an over-exploitation of nature, and humans need to have a deeper awe of nature. At the same time, the pandemic as an opportunity also made me pay attention to the important but often overlooked topic of health, people often do not think about it until they are sick. People are often ignore the threats from external environment, because these injuries caused by these threats cannot be presented to people intuitively, people are not very vigilant about them.So the project is about using clothing , colors and materials to give a language to something that's deeper than most of us wouldn't even understand when we look at figures and facts.
I did many research about functional textile, emotional durable design, and biological design, and tried to find a method to use textile to protect nature while protecting humans. Finally, I chose algae as my raw material. Algae is a positive item which the oceans can give us. It is an ideal material for the future of sustainable manufacturing.Firstly, it is one of the most renewable and fasted growing organisms on earth. Secondly it can provide fishermen income for them during off- season. Furthermore, algae can alter coastal environments, because it also absorbs nutrients from agricultural and sewer. I also used many additions to play a role in protecting humans, the additions include photochromic pigment, red cabbage juice, nano silver and activated carbon.They can all play a role in protecting human health. Furthermore, I did a lot of experiments at home and made bio yarn and bio plastic with amazing strength and flexibility, and then use them to knit and embroidery, just like my mom once did for me, which has emotional value.
In the future, my project may be used in the medical field to protect medical workers and people with poor resistance. But I think that after lowering the cost and shortening the distance between daily life and bio design, bio yarn and bioplastics can enter the family. Perhaps in the future, mothers will regain the habit of hand-knitting and hand-embroidery for their children. Wool will be replaced by biological materials. My project shows that it is not difficult to make bio yarn and bioplastics with protective value at home, which may inspire some people's interest.
I hope my project can remind humans that we are part of nature. we nature effects whole environmental systems. Designers need to consider how to protect nature while protecting humans. It is significant for designers to think about how to change the way we use systems, how to use materials on a large scale, and how to utilize materials with low environmental footprint. -
