SEKSTANTIA is a site-specific video installation which combines an assemblage of four different works:
Analemma, Elliptic Horizon
Cross Cylinder
The pirate Round
Floating Vector
SEKSTANTIA is site-specific video installation that defines and transforms the space in to a unique experience for the spectator and the experiencer. A relation-based assemblage of objects, video projections and sound, formulate the space.
Located in an old, non-functional harbor passage storage in the city of Haifa (Israel), with rough textured, naked, abandoned-presence space, the installation creates a multi-dimensional associative sphere which functions as an unaware harbor-city, creating temporary coincidental intersections and voyage stories.
In the center of the installation stands a kinetic sculpture designed and built from a ready-made surveyor’s tripod, a huge caliper with pointy claws that project a long red laser line, constantly in movement. The line gently dominates the space and echoes horizontality and orientation, the longing for a near and clear horizon, and elevates the concept of the ‘Red line’ while challenging the spectator’s eyes looking at its brightness. A movement of a limit.
The rhythms and passages, which are formulated in the installation, are also movements between light and darkness, shadows and formed images, between the limited sphere and its unlimited possibility to spread out. SEKSTANTIA echo’s and resonances the former navigation instrument and it’s idea, the ‘Sextant’, while deconstructing and disassembling it’s parts.
Working in the specific architecture, the artificial light that enters the space from its tall windows gives borders to the space and a sense of security in the void. A projection on a given architectural element suggests another testimony of an abstracted constructional leftover, a remainder, offering a thought about past, future and human pursue.
The original sound component, which conducts the space, designed to feel as if the space is functioning as a resonance box inspired by a ship’s stern, a space of in-between materials and in-between spheres.
Using geometrical basic shapes such as a line, a triangle and oval shapes is an attempt to simplify the installation’s configuration into basic forms, as the questions arising from SEKSTANTIA deals with distances, measurements, orientation, physics and human impression, the relations between these topics exist in the basis of human DNA.
The viewers and experiencers are invited in to visit SEKSTANTIA in order to explore, to wonder and experience the space with an open wonderer motion.
*SEXTANT – a doubly reflecting navigation instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects.
**SEKSTANTIA – suggests a thought of inversion. Borrows and echo’s the navigation instrument’s idea while deconstruct and disassemble its parts. -
