Coffee. The hug in the mug. The very first thing we reach for after rising in the morning, but that kick of caffeine actually comes with a lot of overseen wastes. An estimated 500 billion disposable coffee cups are used per year around the world, and most of them are made of hard-to-recycle materials like plastic coated foam and paper, making them difficult to be reused.

However, more than the countless cups and lids are dumped into landfills, the countless used-up coffee grounds are also creating wastes. The world population consumes 2.25 billion cups of coffee, resulting in an estimated 500,000 tonnes of spent coffee grounds every day.

We at TZULAÏ believe the numerous wastes don’t necessarily have to be the fate of our caffeine addiction, and every action, no matter how big or small, can help create a more sustainable world. That’s why we upcycled used coffee grounds into our innovative design, the Coffee-Cycle To-go Cups, allowing these coffee grounds to go beyond making your daily brew.

That’s why we upcycled used coffee grounds into our innovative design, the Coffee-Cycle To-go Cups, allowing these coffee grounds to go beyond making your daily brew.

Coffee-Cycle To-go Cups are made of used coffee grounds, recycled bamboo fiber, natural plant starch and resins. The recycled coffee grounds are collected from one of the biggest Taiwanese chain coffee shops every day, and the bamboo powders are the remaining raw materials that are often discarded by local factories.

To reduce our carbon footprint, we collect the leftovers from the coffee shops near our factory. The coffee grounds are dried, washed with ethanol and water, air-dried, and sieved before blended with the recycled bamboo powders. We then add the plant starch and natural resins as binders to “glue” the powdery materials together and to make sure the resulting composite material can withstand repeated exposure to liquids and heat. The coffee ground granulate is further compounded and shaped under heat and pressure, the proprietary technique developed by the TZULAÏ Team.

Many eco-friendly products are actually blended or coated with plastic lining, and when being tossed out, they are difficult to recycle. Coffee-Cycle To-go Cups are 100% made of natural materials and contain 0% of petroleum-derived ingredients. A truly recyclable and sustainable design!
