Detailed description of the submitted project/idea (English)
Beyond the current Mush Hues collection, Circular Union hopes to continue to work with mushroom growers and foragers to develop new colors and find new uses for damaged or over-ripened mushrooms that would otherwise be thrown away in farms. Additionally, Circular Union hopes to collaborate with other makers and brands to bring wood and natural color into their practice.

Mush Hues
Mush-Hues is a design and research project exploring new methods to achieve environmentally conscious color in wood.
The aim of the project was to use only elements that could be sustainably harvested from the Maine (USA) woods.
Pine, Maine’s most prolific natural resource was the natural choice for the collection’s base material.
To celebrate and elevate the soft and porous qualities of pine, attributes which are seen to devalue the wood when compared to less sustainable hardwoods, reclaimed pine boards were hand-colored using textile dye techniques. To achieve the rich ‘mushroom-y’ colors, vats of ‘mushroom teas’ were created by steeping bags of farmed and foraged mushrooms in hot water. Pine’s softness and fibrous surface make it uniquely well suited to absorb the natural color.
Through extensive testing, using a range of cooking and fermentation methods, Mush-Hues includes a color palette ranging from mustardy yellows, soft greens, blue-grays, dark grays, and even a few bright pinks, burgundies and purple shades.
The aspiration of the project is to be a source of inspiration in a growing conversation around a return to a more localized, and by extension, a more sustainable design, and craft practice.
The images included here also reference a project done for the timber company Kayu Lapis Indonesia exploring local botanical and fungi color sources for tropical hardwoods.
