Detailed description of the submitted project/idea
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This Circular design for cigarette butt and packaging recycling has been developed to address the environmental pollution effects and loss of resources experienced due to the improper disposal of cigarette butts. If effectively developed and adopted, this design has the potential of facilitating the recovery of over 70 percent of cigarettes sold worldwide, thereby massively upscaling cigarette butt recycling activates and primary packaging recovery for Recycling. Each cigarette stick has been designed to have a bottom “quench” container made of plastic containing a coolant.
Coolants could include CO2-enriched water in just a sufficient quantity and covered by a thin plastic film that is easily penetrable by the cigarette butt to be quenched. The thin plastic film has been improvised using a tape across the small water containers.
The bottom cooling component is separated from the cigarette sticks using cardboard paper. This is to prevent the damage of the water container and subsequent wetting of the cigarette sticks.
Long cylindrical containers made of paper or foils have been developed to hold each cigarette stick inside the pack. The idea is to return each cigarette butt back to their respective cylindrical containers after quenching. Note that the design has been experimented with by improvising material use.
Improved and mechanized implementation of this design idea would permit the collection of 20 cigarettes per pack as in standard cigarette packs.
The completely used-up cigarette pack (filled with the corresponding cigarette butts) can then be returned to the nearest collection or recycling centre.
IMPACT
This design would help change people's perception to smoking generally, making them see that as minute as a cigarette butt is, there is a huge environmental pollution effect and GHG emission effects due to the dependency on craft paper for packaging and the development of new cigarette butts in making new cigarette sticks. This is backed up by the huge and increasing markets for cigarette butts globally.
The design would help facilitate the recycling of paper, saving more natural resources (wood), thereby supporting the SDG goal 15 (Life on Land). The cigarette butts recycled by TerraCycle and other cigarette butts recycling companies would also lead to huge savings on the use of fibres for cigarette butt production.
Other impacts achievable by the adoption of this design includes the upscaled recycling capacity in the cigarette production sector, job opportunities from the collection systems of the cigarette butt and pack, and the technological advancement of the cigarette manufacturing field generally.
CREATIVITY & DESIGN
This is a new design that has not been adopted by any cigarette manufacturing company before. Although the adoption of this design would require a restructuring of the production value chain of cigarette manufacturers, the effect in the long run as regards environmental sustainability and recycling are much more worth it. The design is earth-centred as it solves the improper waste disposal of cigarette butts and helps reduces the dependencies on trees for making kraft paper for packaging and cotton fibres for cigarette butt making.
All the user needs to do is to shake off the ashes from the cigarette butt before quenching to avoid staining the other quenching containers and carefully return the butt back to the pack, and then after using up the cigarette sticks, drop off the pack in the nearest collection centre. -
