Brief concept description of the submitted project/idea

Woodpecker was born eleven years ago with the only purpose of providing an alternative, sustainable construction solution to be implemented in the most remote locations of our Colombian geography. We have been doing it, by manufacturing WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) construction profiles out of the coffee husk and recycled polymer. All our Raw material comes from Colombian coffee farmers and independent recyclers, giving better use to over 850 tons of waste per year, that otherwise would be polluting rives and land fields. The production process does not have any waste. When quality control detects defective products that for any reason are not suitable for selling, these products can be crush and incorporated again into the production line once again.

By combining these two fibers (coffee husk & polymer), the outcome is a final product that is durable, light, maintenance-free, self-extinguishing, and what is even better, gives a finished look. Enhancing in every way possible people´s living conditions. Over the years, we have focused on three main solutions: Rural social housing, basic sanitary units, and rural schools infrastructure. To date, we have delivered over 3.200 houses, more than 1.000 schools, and over 100 sanitary units. Contributing to rural communities all over our Colombian territory.

MAECO is a well-known traditional construction company that has been in the market of social construction in Colombia for more than 40 year. Been and expert in solving social construction with traditional construction methods. Realized that there was a latent need and that it was not being resolved. That is why decided to join the decided in conjunction with the University of the Andes and the national government program (Colciencias) to invest in finding a solution that could not only solve the living conditions of the communities in rural areas, but also doing it through a solution that does not harm the environment. That is how after a couple of years of studies and tests, Woodpecker SAS was created and the WPC extrusion system was implemented and perfected.
