Brief concept description of the submitted project/idea
As a supporter of Taiwan’s stone industry clusters, the 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop returns to the industry clusters’ sustainability, displaying the values of design and the stone industry. “Back to Original” has been set as the start and end vision by the curator team HEY SHENG, discovering more diverse sides of stone materials by bringing emotions and warmth to crafts and designs. Putting spotlights on innovative design that focuses on micro-production.
Dibao Stone enterprise just passed the torch to the youngsters of their second generations in 2019, wanting brand building and innovative design. They are one of the participants 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop. Their brand originated and core concept from 20mm-thick slabs, which is the thickness of stone materials most commonly used in Taiwan. This thickness also performs the best in craft application as well as when holding weights when used in floors and walls. Their brand name is 20MM Concept.
Basic on the foundation of 20MM Concept brand value, HEY SHENG through the 4+1 steps process with Dibao Stone enterprise as a partner in the 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop, and integrate its manufacturing experience with the creative community, discovering more diverse sides of stone materials by bringing emotions and warmth to crafts and designs and adapting to changing demands in the future.
With the misaligned layering of 20mm-thick marble, the “Diamond Pleats” displays naturally shaped ripples. Atop the metal bottom, the vases can systematically morph into taller or shorter pieces that combine aesthetics and functionality. There are multiple different feelings and beauty from different angles. It shows and strengthens the stone's features and values. -

STEP 1 Communication
During the visits, Dibao Stone enterprise explained various manufacturing methods as well as characteristics of different stones before showing how products are actually manufactured, and HEY SHENG also completes the physical senses of the stones. Already with thorough concepts and creative ideas before the workshop was launched, we got to participate constructively, observing and familiarizing ourselves with the advantages of the local stone processing as well as asking questions and confirming possibilities for manufacturing innovative designs. Meanwhile, the companies shared that the stone industry has gradually taken steps to take costs of the expendables and environmental protection into consideration for manufacturing, which became useful when we adjusted their directions on their pieces.
STEP 2 Workshop
Designers went on a tour to the stone industry clustering for visiting including six stone enterprises and eight cooperation manufacturers, they are showing the competitive edges of these satellite manufacturers in Taiwan. During the entire workshop, they demonstrated a wide range of highly professional techniques respectively, including water jet cutting, stone product manufacturing, lathing (wet processing), molding, 5-axis CNC processing, etc. Designers got to familiarize themselves with all stones and manufacturing up close by learning to distinguish different materials and choose suitable ones as well as knowing first-hand all processing steps and tips. Therefore, they were able to determine needed materials and resources needed and also thoroughly assess the overall designs. The curator reminded all workshop participants to factor in manufacturing costs (for environmental protection) and adaptability (for mass production) in terms of micro-production.
STEP 3 League leaders
The primary objective of the 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop is to establish a symbiotic partnership between the stone industry and designers. Via 2 tours displaying the local industry’s manufacturing capacity, the designers have had a deep understanding of the industry’s strengths, which became useful inputs in their creative processes.
The first is to build mutual trust. It began with stone enterprises, sharing their brand ideas and feature products. Along with the SRDC technicians, they explained both the current conditions and future trends of Taiwan’s stone market and industry from the points of design, manufacturing, and non-profit organizations. This has allowed designers to put their original ideas into perspective by making realistic evaluations and reaching out to potential manufacturers for future collaboration. Second, the designers got to introduce their ideas in a more creative and fun fashion by presenting 10 slides with 10 seconds each. Some even chose the unconventional way with vlogs of their daily lives to showcase their brands. Besides closing the distance between designers and manufacturers, it enabled the stone enterprises to match designers that align with brand values.
Accompanied by the curator and the SRDC directors, stone enterprises sat down and talked face-to-face with collaborating designers afterward. The discussion spanned from employing proper processing techniques, manufacturing feasibility, design strategies, and sales on the market. Designers were provided with solutions to their problems on manufacturing for their ideas, and the exchanges also served as a direct and effective channel between the design and manufacturing circles. During this stage, the curator also communicated with stone enterprises that desire to establish house brands, helping them find missions and directions of their own while facing challenges from existing designs. To show them how to maintain the cores and edges of house brands.
STEP 4 Presentation of design concepts
After 3 visits to the industry, the designers finally presented the concepts of their projects for the first time on the last day of the workshop. In the presentation, each designer talked about the origins of their ideas and processing techniques to be undertaken, and the curator Vii Chen and the SRDC directors asked detailed questions to know more before offering advice for designers for further adjustments.
This is actually a great example of strategic partnership. As most designers had already decided what materials and processing techniques to choose during the 3 visits, the signals for potential collaboration were given to desired stone enterprises at the first presentations with slides and sketches. Therefore, designers were able to tune their proposals and find solutions for manufacturing problems with less time and more in-depth knowledge of the industry. On the other hand, stone enterprises learned whether they were able to carry out the proposed techniques.
The entire presentation gave designers in the audience an opportunity to understand the industry’s needs when the enterprises exchanged their thoughts on the proposed ideas. Moreover, the industry got to learn more about the current market trends. It all became additional achievements of the 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop.
On the next day, the SRDC and the curator Vii Chen asked both the stone enterprises and the designers who they would choose as partners in orders. Designers also began adjusting the piece sketches and making final changes based on the inputs from the enterprises.
STEP 4+ Final presentation of the partnership
In the last chapter, the designers present their respective final proposals and then, arriving at an important milestone of the 2019 Hualien International Stone Workshop, be a partnership agreement.
It was high-pressure and fast-paced with all the processes, matching, announcement, and agreement signing. On this day, not only did everyone hang out with each other like family after interacting for 4 days, but the stone enterprises also changed their previous attitude towards designers from feeling unfamiliar to building trust.
After the workshop, besides the industry and designers' professional inputs, the Workshop serves as a venue that promotes participants' achievements to larger international markets. It strengthens the stone's features and values, the stone industry's manufacturing powers, and the design community's competitive edges by bringing all of the above Back to Original, and as a result, builds a new and sustainable design-centered economy for Taiwan's stone brands. Into the New Generation of Cultural Technology in Taiwan Stone Industry. -
