「Fabric Records: Unheard Scenery」は、10週間ごとにメーカーから廃棄されるテキスタイル・サンプルのアップサイクルに取り組む必要性から生まれた、芸術性と持続可能性を実現するためのプロジェクトだった。Studio POETIC CURIOSITYは、あるテキスタイルメーカーからこのような無駄になってしまうテキスタイルの斬新な用途を見つけたいという、切実な相談を受けた。この難問が私たちの好奇心に火をつけ、「廃棄物」が真に意味するものを再認識する原動力となった。
データとノイズが溢れるこの世界で、これらの布地をLPサイズのレコードに変えるというアイデアは、単なる感覚的な体験を超えた、布地と音の結婚という新しい合成を提供した。異なる糸と経験から織り成されたそれぞれの布の質感は、かつてそれを身につけた人との記憶を呼び起こす音を生み出す。このようにして、このプロジェクトは、見過ごされていた端切れを「聞こえない風景」の断片に変え、素材の触覚的な本質と、語られざる物語をとらえる。
柔らかなリネン、無骨なデニム、滑らかなシルクなど、それぞれの布の質感が多様な音響風景を提供する。再生されたとき、聴き手はただ音を聴いているのではなく、過去の経験の合唱、布が触れてきたもの、触れてきた人のシンフォニーに同調するのだ。それは親密で多感覚的な旅であり、物質世界と私たちの関係に疑問を投げかけると同時に、廃棄されたテキスタイルに尊厳ある第二の人生を提供する。



The inception of 'Fabric Records: Unheard Scenery' was a serendipitous blend of artistry and sustainability, borne out of a need to address the wasteful cycle of textile samples discarded every 10 weeks. Studio POETIC CURIOSITY was approached with the compelling question of finding a novel application for these otherwise wasted textile pieces. It was this quandary that ignited our curiosity and drove us to reconceptualize what 'waste' truly means.
In a world overflowing with data and noise, the idea of transforming these fabrics into LP-sized records offered a new synthesis: a marriage of textile and sound that transcends mere sensory experience. Each fabric’s unique texture, woven from different threads and experiences, produces sounds as unique as the individual who once wore it. In this manner, the project turns overlooked scraps into pieces of 'unheard scenery,' capturing the tactile essence of the material and the untold stories it carries.
The texture of each fabric—a soft linen, a rugged denim, or a smooth silk—offers a diversity of acoustic landscapes. When played, the listener isn't just hearing a sound; they are tuning into a chorus of past experiences, a symphony of what the fabric has touched and who it has touched. It's an intimate, multisensory journey that calls into question our relationship with the material world, while also offering a dignified second life to discarded textiles.
By pairing auditory and tactile experiences, 'Fabric Records: Unheard Scenery' not only reimagines what it means to 'listen,' but also redefines waste as a substrate for creative and emotional exploration. FabCafe Nagoya assisted the studio’s collection of old and waste fabrics offered by fabric industry in Nagoya and Gifu areas in Japan.

In 100 years, local communities could look back at 'Fabric Records: Unheard Scenery' as a turning point in how they perceive waste and resource management. In 1000 years, the project could evolve into a cultural artifact, a time capsule of how society once turned waste into emotional narratives. As resources become increasingly scarce, these fabric records could serve as a template for future civilizations on how to creatively repurpose materials, ensuring sustainability and cultural continuity.
The longevity of the project, in both cultural and economic terms, thus promises a lasting impact on local people and resources.
