Global Cerah (GC) integrates waste management system of agricultural waste and production of alternative protein into a sustainable solution supported by robotic process automation (RPAs) and optic sensors. Our vision is to turn waste into protein for the formation of agri-food circular economy. Firstly, we collect the wastes from local farmers and plantation owners before input into the waste treatment machinery for processing in order to remove acidic elements before we go for two options: Option 1 Directly used as alternative fertilizers (feeds and fertilizers) or Option 2 We will pass those recycled output for black soldier fly (BSF) larvae to feed on and when they reach a maturity stage that consists of sufficient protein as feed meals and then dried up during the production system before sell to our customers. For local farmers and plantation owners, we provide them subsidized alternative protein that is lower than market price.

How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
We integrate waste management and production of alternative proteins into a sustainable solution because this can enhance the efficiency of converting agricultural waste into alternative protein without breakdown of procedures in between. Implementation of RPAs and optic sensors allow us to carry out Total Quality Management for waste treatments and maintaining consistent nutritional level of the alternative protein. With this, we can encourage local farmers and plantation owners to pass their waste to us instead of using conventional waste disposal methods that caused pollutions to the environment. We also keen to introduce the usage of alternative protein to the market due to its organic nature and free from chemical substances. To do so, we implement subsidy program for local farmers to buy lower price of feeds and fertilizers from us, which are lower than market rate. Eventually, this can ease their cost burden in overall production and increase their daily income. Most importantly, we also enhance food security due to lower down the costs of food for end consumers in the near future.

Special Prize Question 1: Is there a mechanism in place to inherit culture and industry as assets for people living in that area 100 or even 1000 years from now?
Poor waste disposal methods that lead to climate change is our primary concern and Global Cerah aims to establish a value supply chain that connects effective waste management and regeneration of organic feeds to build a sustainable circular economy. Farmers and plantation owners can collect their respective organic waste and pass to our site for treatment before upcycling into our system for production of alternative protein. Besides that, we want to empower them to be environmental-friendly and replace conventional waste disposal practices with our solution. Thus, we are working together with local authorities and local community to develop a value supply chain that connects all stakeholders in the circular economy. This will enhance the ecosystem to balance the purpose and prosperity for everyone in changing status quo with environmental friendly solution for the future of agricultural industry in the long term future.

Special Prize Question 2: What is the positive impact on biodiversity? Is the project creating a cycle not just from a human-centered perspective but for the entire ecosystem?
We are building an agri-food circular economy that can positively impacts our environment and stakeholders in the long-term future. Upcycling organic waste without proper management in the industry back into the agri-food ecosystem as alternative protein in terms of fertilizers and feed meals which added values to the stakeholders from economic and environmental perspectives. Secondly, this also reduces air or land pollutions caused by conventional waste disposal methods in the industry such as incineration and landfill. a common practice in the market that leads to emission of landfill gas (LFG), a natural by-product of the decomposition of organic material in landfills. Methane inside LFG is one of the main components that causes greenhouse gas (GHG) and leads to climate change. The connection between organic loss and waste and climate change is increasingly recognized as important and so is the link between climate change and agriculture and supply chain resiliency.
We also enhance biodiversity in environment by reducing soil degradation that commonly caused by poor waste management. Our integrated solution removes acidic elements from organic waste before produces alternative protein or directly residue process into lands. In addition, we can conserve nutrition within the soil for future agricultural activities which is important for regenerative economy. -
Special Prize Question 3: Are you enabling new forms of collaboration with others? New forms of collaboration might include cross-industry cooperation, co-creation with consumers, or role transformations within the supply chain.
We practice continuous improvement for our integrated system with the support from our R&D partners, Kao Yuan University and Monash University in order to upgrade our system from time to time. Thus, we can improve our capacity to manage increasing demands of waste treatment in the market and also enhance higher efficiency of producing alternative protein. This is critical for us to maintain our resilience to changing requirements from the industry and enforcement of healthy feeds from the local authorities. In addition, we also collaborate with SGS, our TQM partner to inspect nutritional level of our final products for the consistency of quality management purpose. Not only just that, we can customize our alternative protein for the requirements from stakeholders. Not only just that, market expansion is crucial for us to share our solution around the region. We currently applying technology sharing model to share our solution to business partners in both domestic and foreign markets. This is similar to franchising model which allows us to expand into new markets with stand-by networks and industry knowledge. Last but not least, we aim to establish a value supply chain that involves all relevant stakeholders and this effort will be significant for us to build a sustainable circular economy. Farmers and plantation owners can collect their respective organic waste and pass to our site for treatment before upcycling into our system for BSF larvae breeding. Besides that, we want to educate them on the importance of circular economy as agricultural waste issue is becoming serious in their community. Empowering them to be environmental-friendly and replace conventional waste disposal practices with our solution. We will provide guidance to them on how to segregate wastes and transport to our supply chain and ensure that consistent supply of raw materials (waste) to us, so we can produce more alternative protein and resell back to them.
