湧水と霧のブナ林 - Beech forest of spring water and fog

湧水池－別名「熊の水飲み場」。
鳥海山の雪解け水が80年以上もかかって湧き出ている。
水量も水温も年間を通じてほぼ一定している。
４カ所の出つぼから湧き出た水は約16ヘクタールの湿原を形成し、
湧き出た水は白雪川に合流して山麓の平野を潤しているようだ。
そして、この湿原一帯のブナ原生林には奇形ブナがそちこちに見
られその個性豊かな樹々の表情を一本一本丁寧に見ているだけで
も実に魅力的で見飽きることはない。
奇形ブナの原因は、豪雪、噴火、炭焼きでの伐採などの説がある
が、はっきりとはわからないようだ。
ブナ林のなかには炭焼き釜のあとが50基以上も見つかっているこ
とから、炭焼き説も有力視されているらし い。
