Circular Knitic

Circular Knitic demonstrates the potential of craft in the era of digital fabrication. The main aim of the project is to integrate textile manufacturing into the contemporary makers’ culture. Circular Knitic is an open source replicable circular knitting machine produced with digital fabrication and makers’ tools, like 3D printing, lasercut, Arduino, and makerbeam.
With the rapid development of digital fabrication technology, a 3d printer is gradually turning into a commodity that every creative studio have on their desk. At the same time, Fab Labs and makerspaces are a lot about hard-surface object production while the first digital fabrication tool, which is an electronic knitting machine back to 1976, has been forgotten and discontinued. Hence, with this project, Circular Knitic, and duo’s earlier one called Knitic, their goal is to introduce textile fabrication to the fabbers' culture.
Varvar and Mar have been working with knitting and knitting machines since 2012. With this project, they wanted anyone with access to digital fabrication tools like a 3D printer and laser cutter to replicate their Circular Knitic machine, and for the Makers community to further develop it. It shows how beautiful textiles can be produced with digital fabrication tools - what they called ‘‘Soft Digital Fabrication’.
