Sphere Of Shadows

Sphere of Shadows was commissioned by Stourfield Junior School, Bournemouth, UK, to commemorate the 120 children who had been involved in setting up their new outdoor classroom. The brief called for a 120-part sculpture to go in the garden.

In an age of "selfies" I was inspired by the idea of making the sculpture from 120 individual portraits of the children involved. This also develops upon the trend in schools to have tea towels and posters made with prints of children's drawings etc. I wanted the work to both be a sculpture, and interactive.

The finished artwork is 1.5 metres in diameter (average height of the children), and made from Stokboard recycled agricultural HDPE plastic. It serves both as a commemorative monument and can be taken down and used as a rollable plaything. A hidden trapdoor allows children to get inside.
