えくす手は、様々な形や動きに変化するバーチャルな手でピアノを弾くことで、身体拡張の感覚が体験できる作品です。
手は、身体の中で、もっとも道具に近い器官です。
この作品は、人間と道具との新たな共進化を生み出すことを目的として作られました。
人類の長い歴史の中で、人間は身体に合わせた道具を生み出し、道具によって自身を進化させ続けてきました。
もし、身体拡張技術が身体を現実の制約から解放し、身体が肉体的で、固定された、不変のものではなくなったとしたら―――、変幻自在になったとしたら―――？
今ある道具の、新しい使い方が生まれるでしょう。
新しい身体に合わせて、新しい道具が生まれるでしょう。
その道具はまた私たちを進化させ、さらに新たな身体のあり方が生まれるでしょう。
通常の手に合わせてデザインされたピアノを拡張された手で弾くと、あるときは便利に、あるときは弾きづらく感じるかもしれません。
その新しい制約条件の中でのパフォーマンスは芸術となり、新しいメロディと楽器を創造し、新しい身体の可能性を引き出し、私たちをさらに進化させるでしょう。
箱の中に両手を差し込んで、この奇妙な感覚と、その可能性とを、その手で確かめてみてください。
Metamorphosis Hand is a work that provides an experience of having an augmented body by enabling to play the piano with virtual hands whose shape and movement are transforming dynamically.
I made this work with the aim of causing a novel human-tool coevolution.
In our long history, humans have invented tools that are fit for our bodies and evolved ourselves by tool-use.
What if body-augmentation technologies free our bodies from real-world constraints——and if our bodies undergo METAMORPHOSIS, from a physical, fixed and unchangeable nature?
New use of existing tools will originate.
New tools that are fit for our augmented bodies will originate.
The new tools will also evolve ourselves, and another new way of a body will originate.
You might feel it is sometimes convenient, but sometimes difficult when you play the normal piano with your augmented hands.
Performances under new constraints will be art, the constraints will generate new melodies and instruments, bring out potentials of our bodies and evolve ourselves more and more.
Please insert your hands into the box, and you will undergo the strange sensation and its possibilities with your own hands.
