WireMolding: 3D Modeling Approach Involving Molding with Wire
WireMolding is a 3D modeling approach for practical personal 3D printing with which sketches can be created to construct a 3D model from the bi-dimensional shape of a physical wire mold. Due to the popularization of personal 3D printing, it is assumed that 3D printers are used at the scenes that came out of by demand from the general public. However, when we make practical tools for personal belongings or furniture by ourselves with a 3D printer, it is difficult for beginners without technical knowledge because of being necessary to design such tools to fit in with objects. The system we implemented based on this approach creates full-scale sketches from photos of molds made by bending wire into arbitrary shapes or molding parts of physical objects by pressing wire firmly against them. By importing such sketches into the modeling software, you can construct 3D models whose shapes are same as the molds and fit in with physical objects only by designating the heights of models. Moreover, this approach makes it easy to design curved surface of 3D models, which is especially difficult to construct. Anyone can make 3D models for 3D printing more easily with this approach.
