Internet of Refugees
The project aims to create an information centre for 21st century refugees, inspired by real survival-through-technology protocols posted on Syrian refugees’ Facebook groups. Through the suggested existence of a specialised organisation named Relief & Monitoring, one can walk through the perplexing experience of the contemporary refugee crisis. This puzzlement may be triggered by multiple issues, such as who benefits from the use of technology - the support group or the state security; The ongoing privatisation of aid systems for asylum seekers; and overall, the notion of making a fortune from misfortunate people.
From a line of advertised DIY gadgets, printable anywhere in 3D technology, and on to a virtual tour with an avatar serving as a “refugee guide”, Relief and Monitoring blends facts with surrealism, thus letting the dystopian experience of forced deplacement in the digital age emerge in full form.
