Please describe the concept of your artwork in 2000 words.
Smog Season is the workpiece that pulled the data of PM 2.5 to satirically compare with the bad effect of cigarette smoke on the human body through pictures and warning on a cigarette label so that viewers would realize the bad effect. They would start to question the problem that happened as in the past people started to misunderstand and try to adapt oneself to stay with it just like it is normal. If we compare the problem of PM 2.5 like the season, it would be a very bad monsoon that people must suffer and endure it to pass. The problem of contaminated air is considered severe and affects health in the long run. It should be solved seriously.
Referring to the research titled Air Pollution and Cigarette Equivalence by Richard A. Muller and Elizabeth A. Muller which specified that smoking 1 cigarette is equivalent to putting pollution of PM 2.5 into the body in the amount of 22 micrograms per cubic meter per day. http://berkeleyearth.org/air-pollution-and-cigarette-equivalence/ referring the data of pm 2.5 from https://aqicn.org/data-platform/register/
"What do we breathe in?" The work wishes to expand on the point of PM 2.5 in Thailand. It is expanding into a chronic problem that is not solved. The work wants to stimulate the thoughts so that everyone returns to look at this problem seriously and question on the right to receive clean air for breathing. The problem that happened is hard to control and might not be able to solve easily. It requires cooperation from the government and the private sector. The interesting thing is that this problem does not occur only in Thailand. Many countries around the world are facing with air pollution problem that people must directly take on the burden of the consequence.
Warning pictures on a cigarette pack are modified into animation on the computer and then it is printed on the pack again.
This work consists of 80 cigarette packs installed on 5-level round base driven by a motor and there is a light sensor, 7 segment, LED, and Arduino.
The work is designed so that viewers would use their mobile telephone to scan QR and put the selected picture at the Light Sensor. The light value from the display will pull the recorded statistical data of PM 2.5 and order the motor to spin the circle base and blink the light at 18 FPS so the pictures on a cigarette pack would seem to be moving. 7 segment is specified to show date, time, and the value of PM 2.5 according to the data received. All the system is written into a program and controlled via Arduino.
*The difference of PM 2.5 data is divided into 5 levels. Therefore, the work will turn on the blinking light to see animated pictures on each level. For example, the minimum value will only see the bottom level. The maximum value can see every level. -
