This ear-amplifier device is worn like a headset and is flanked by two flexible hoses, on which different sizes of horns can be plugged in. The sizes influence the frequencies perceived, the capacity of focus and the amplification factor. An eye-covering device is provided to enhance hearing by inhibiting another sense, sight.
This device enhances our sense of smell. Samples are collected by hand, fed into the funnel, crushed, and finally heated in the glass flask. The scent rises through the complex tubing up to the mask. The other nozzle is connected to a filtered air container, allowing the wearer to clean out their nose with scent-free air.
Focusing on sight, this contraption uses mirrors and lenses to observe ordinary matter differently. The lenses zoom on the object held in the clips. One of the periscopes looks at it from underneath, while the other one allows the wearer to see behind them. In order to be immersed in your surroundings and deepen focus, two ear plugs are chained to the mask, blocking out distracting sounds.

Please describe the concept of your artwork in 2000 words.
SENT?NEL is a critical design project that reconsiders our relationship with nature as inherently sensorial
creatures, reflecting on our perception of the physical world. The project is composed of three wearables –
‘Suit hearing,’ ‘Suit smell’ and ‘Suit sight’ – that poetically question the trust that humans have in sources of
information and knowledge.
Each device help us to connect back to available signals and direct information by amplifying our senses.
The slow process of ‘taming’ our environment builds knowledge and empathy between humans and nature,
a relationship often found in rural communities where the use of senses to perceive the surroundings is
more accessible. This ad hoc design sheds a new light on analogue devices to question the ubiquitous use
of electronics that can compromise trust. -
