In a democracy, everyone has a responsibility for the decisions made and for the outcomes and results of those decisions that affect everyone in the democracy as a whole. However, in some cases, the results may be skewed by certain stakeholders who are more senior or may have more authority and privileges than others. This may occasionally mean that the results fall in favour of the few, rather than of the many, meaning that, even in a democracy, decisions could be made that aren’t benefitting the whole of the community.

Interactive Swing is an experimental expression of democracy, giving people the equal opportunity to control the lights themselves by swinging the swing. The interactive swing features 8 individual swings which each have their own sensors and colours to define and identify them. When someone swings the LED tube located above the swing is triggered and lights up in a rhythm according to the specific movement of the swing. The more people that get involved, the more varied and stimulating the colour scheme becomes. The vivid light patterns only appear when people participate, making it a more interactive experience. When there’s no one using the swing, the lights will be white to symbolise a blank canvas.

The combination of lights is an imaginative expression of democracy where all participants have an equal part in the results. We believe that this interpretation of lights will encourage the individual to have a positive view of contributing and expressing themselves within a community, helping them to develop a sense of belonging.
