Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
In this project, there are three challenges our team was trying to approach and connect:
(1) The problem around a lack of trust of the Thai government around the topic of waste management.
(2) The fact that the government has not yet utilized waste to energy technology for increasing efficiency in waste management.
(3) The lack of research around human behavior in dealing with waste management and recycling, especially in this local context.
Therefore, the goal of the Wonder Waste Collection is to try to take a bottom-up approach where the local community is intimately involved in how they want to manage their own waste. Through the project, we could leverage the support of the government’s existing managing network of waste to energy factories.
These locations were strategically chosen since they are close to the waste management facilities. At the beginning of the program, each designer needed to research the local area and recreate a new route for waste management based on the local situation. After researching the local behavior around waste management in the area (what type of waste they have, how the local people can have a meaningful role in the process, etc.), the 4 designers re-designed the waste journey together with the local people. -

Special Prize Question 1: How does your project or idea make use of local resources, such as materials and knowledge, to tackle its challenge?
-
Special Prize Question 2: How does your project or idea sustain its activities through the involvement of the local community?
A secondary goal of this project was to find a convincing incentive for the local community to be involved in the process. One team tried to use a cash incentive (the “Power Pick.co” group), the second incentive was exercise (in the “care4” group), the third incentive was cuteness (the “BunBun recycling cat robot project”), and the fourth incentive was communication (the “Baba Waste project”). In the end, the communication incentive project, Baba Waste, was the most popular of the 4 and continues to be used today without intervention from the original project members. You can read some details of each of the 4 projects under the Wonder Waste collection below:
Wonder Waste Project 1: “PowerPick.co”
Location: Charoenkrung, Bangkok, Thailand
Description:
RDF LAB: Pop-Up Service Point with Counter Service Automated bag accepting machines (Pop-Up 01) and RDF-3 fuel-to-fuel processing lab (Pop-Up 02) with compact size "grinding, washing, baking and drying equipment" enables easy production of RDF-3 at the household or community level.
Insights:
- There are many forms of households, how does each household make a correct distinction of the different kinds of waste? It starts with understanding and using tools correctly in order to separate waste more easily. Using service design concepts to create an accessible waste separation system alongside motivation driven by care among people in the community leads to effective management.
- Most consumers do not wash the packaging before throwing it away. Mixed with food waste, it is difficult to bring to benefit since most of the packaging ends up in landfill, causing pollution and waste of farmland. This ends up increasing management costs.
-PowerPick builds a quality post-consumer separation system from the very beginning. Garbage entering the PowerPick system must be dry, clean, and empty to be effective as a waste management system.
Wonder Waste Project Project 2: “care4”
Location: Nong Kham, Bangkok, Thailand
Description:
The “care4” waste management system utilizes 'Separates-receives-rests-delivery’ with a service to pick up garbage to the front of the house and create community participation
Wonder Waste Project 3: “BunBun recycling cat robot project”
Location: Srichan, Khon Kaen, Thailand
Description:
We worked with a high cloud robot company to develop a robot cat to come and pick up, help you sort and pick up your waste at home. The waste is then transferred to a waste power plant in Kangen. We developed two robots to work together to facilitate waste to energy alongside local people and the local government agency.
Insights:
-There was a lot of testing, and the local people were interested in the project, but there were some challenges. For example we found that the pavement was tough for the robot cat since it was uneven so sometimes the cat needed to move in the road which was dangerous.
-This project was shown at the Isan Creative Festival.

Wonder Waste Project Project 4: “Baba Waste project”
Location: Srichan, Khon Kaen, Thailand
Description:
Waste management system for coffee and homes with separate color bags and special bins. Separating waste to reduce the moisture content of waste to be used to produce electricity. From source to destination with a waste management business model for communities and sustainable tourism.
Insights:
-Cafes, restaurants, and houses in the old town produce a lot of organic waste with high humidity. This is difficult to recycle.
-Presentation, alternatives and waste separation routes which are organized in a way that is appropriate for the area will be the future of waste management in the context of Phuket.
-Phuket City has also been selected as a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO or Creative City of Gastronomy. -
Special Prize Question 3: How does your project or idea eliminate waste or pollution while regenerating natural resources?
