Type Stands On Its Own

美術 / グラフィック / プロダクト / その他
My concept is laser-cut letters that can stand upright in a simple, elegant way. This is done by folding the letter on itself. I used a laser-cutter to cut my design out of black card, folded them, and photographed it. You can see the diagram at http://www.awrd.com/portfolios/typochondria/archive/366666.

As shown in my picture, a unique dimension is added to the work when light shines behind it. It gives the illusion that the laser-cut letters are standing on more letters. I believe this interaction with light makes my concept much more dynamic compared to a regular greeting card.

This concept originally started as a typographic sculpture that communicated the power of typography to make people look twice.

But this technique can be applied to all letters of the English alphabet – so you can make any message you want. Therefore, it can still be marketed as a non-traditional greeting card.

If this concept were to be sold as a mass-produced product, one solution would be to sell them as packaged sets of pre-cut letters based on common greetings. For example, a ‘Happy Birthday’ packaged set would include:

– All the letters needed to spell ‘Happy Birthday’, and
– Multiple copies of all 26 letters in the English alphabet for extra words the customer may want to write

If the customer wants to fold the letters themselves, the laser-cut letters will need to have fold lines. This would allow the letters to be sent as a flat package to the customer.
