PLAYFUL FUROSHIKI Project

The “FUROSHIKI” is an item which encapsulates the Japanese wisdom that “less is more.” This simple square piece of fabric has an infinite number of uses. It can be used to wrap gifts or refreshments for travel, used as a bag by attaching a handle, as a multi-purpose cover or tissue box cover. Increasingly, people are using FUROSHIKI in daily life. The PLAYFUL FUROSHIKI Project gathers FUROSHIKI designs born to such free and imaginative perspectives from around the world to be displayed at the digital fabrication cafe FabCafe Tokyo!

AWRD Team (Tokyo)

We are so grateful for all the colorful and beautiful designs submitted by applicants, most of whom were from Japan, China, and Taiwan. Our big question for this project was: Can the simplicity and flexibility of Furoshiki as a tool be appreciated across cultures? In the selection process, we, the editorial team, focused on finding designs that allow great flexibility, an important attribute of Furoshiki, and those that boldly go beyond the stereotypical image of Furoshiki as an “exotic Japanese souvenir.” We are very much looking forward to seeing the 20 awarded designs debut in the market as the whole new type of Furoshiki.

When you visit someone with a gift, a graphical print Furoshiki comes very handy. It’s fun when you carry it folded as a bag and when you unfold and open it up. People often say, “I love that design!” and it leads to great conversation, which might make you even happier than them actually liking the gift itself. For Furoshiki to become an everyday item, it needs to look nice no matter how it’s folded or what shape of object it’s wrapping. So our main criteria were, “Can this design look nice in any position or angle?” and “Is it unique and intriguing enough for people to ask what the motif is?

Congratulations to all of the winners! I’m amazed by the creativity and quality of work submitted by all of the applicants and I’m pleasantly surprised by amount of entries submitted in Asia. The idea of Furoshiki is about how we can create happiness for ourselves or others in our daily lives through design. Through event like this, we can show that design as a communication tool, allows us to appreciate different culture and creativity beyond our own language barrier. I look forward to creating more events like this on loftwork.com, so we can share more ideas Asia-wide or even globally.

Here are the 18 award winners!

Title:my desk

Creator:matsudanatsuru

Concept:Thank you so much for the award! This design captures a messy desktop with various food, drink, and toys scattered all over. To avoid such a mess, use this Furoshiki to wrap up your important belongings and keep them in the corner of the room.

Judge's comment

What a fun way of thinking! We can keep away the mess using Furoshiki with a messy desktop printed on it. The solid illustration is suitable for anyone regardless of gender. It’ll also make a great interior fabric to cover a messy shelf filled with collections you can’t throw away.

Title:Strawberry Field

Creator:

Concept:I decided to forget that I was designing Furoshiki and just fill the square with strawberries. The result was unexpected and interesting. Thank you for selecting my work!

Judge's comment

I was surprised by the elegant strawberry pattern, which completely goes beyond the stereotypical Japanese image of Furoshiki. The strawberries look fresh and beautiful, and the layout allows the pattern to come out nicely in whatever way it’s wrapped. I’d love to use this Furoshiki to bring a big, whole strawberry shortcake to a party!

Title: NEW WAVES

Creator:

Concept: The best thing about Furoshiki is its versatility. You can use it to wrap a gift or as a trivet. You can wear it as a cape and run around the streets.I hope each user will come up with their own ideas to use the NEW WAVES Furoshiki and give it a new value.

Judge's comment

Seeing the bold, big, handwritten “NEW WAVES” on Furoshiki, a very traditional tool, is really refreshing and eye-opening. All the Furoshiki made in this project will be waterproof, so I would love to use this design to stay dry in the sudden rain at outdoor events like music festivals. It’ll look so cool, don’t you think?

Title:

Creator:

Concept:I had always wanted Furoshiki with a grafted cactus pattern, so I decided to make it myself. I’m very happy it will be now turned into actual Furoshiki.

Judge's comment

The colorful cactuses will no doubt catch your succulent-loving heart! If you look carefully, you will know it’s a very carefully crafted design using watercolor and cutout. Hang it on the wall, and it’ll turn your room into a relaxing space.

Title:

Creator:

Concept:I drew many different grafted cactuses and turned it into a Furoshiki design. There are so many ways to enjoy this Furoshiki, as rain cover for your purse, to cover up shelves or to keep your furniture from dust, or to wrap around your head like a headband. The unique grafted cactuses will spark up and make your everyday life more colorful!

Judge's comment

The fruit that appears as “Omoseta” when you visit someone's house is a popular person who makes everyone smile without thinking. If you wrap the fruit in this very juicy “peach”, “orange” and brightly striped furoshiki, it will surely increase your expectations.

Title:horses

Creator:

Concept: This is a style of two funny horses. If we can try to catch everyone's attention and pursue fashion, can we not lose humor? In addition, I chose names for both of them. The white one is Jerome III who confessed to be aristocratic. He considers himself to be a noble existence. He also thinks that he is the most beautiful existence in the world because of his coat color; the brown one is Taro He is an informal child in the country. Although he thinks Jerome's thinking is stupid, he also admires him for maintaining dignity and elegance all the time.

Judge's comment

We received many designs with great illustrations, but I could never forget these horses looking completely relaxed and “out there” once I saw them. I would love everyone to use it every day, to decorate your purse or to wrap your lunch, and get asked, “What the heck is it?”

Title:moon

Creator:

Concept: Thank you very much for selecting my work among many. Since I live in Kyoto, I get to see many different designs of Furoshiki. But I never realized there was so much to think about when designing Furoshiki, from how beautiful it looks when spread out, the way the pattern changes when wrapping something, and more. I’m impressed by the depth of Furoshiki-designing. I’m looking forward to using the Furoshiki I designed.

Judge's comment

At first glance, it looks like a typical Scandinavian textile pattern, but it’s got more depth in its familiarity. The flat crescent moon motifs are put together with hand-painted “shadows,” capturing the Japanese sensitivity and love for delicate, short-lasting beauty, such as the moon, and transcending it into something contemporary.

Title:flow

Creator:王

Concept:Flowing time carries everything that happens in life. I hope that the day will be refreshing and simple but never stop moving in a good direction. The diamond-shaped petals floating on the water symbolize the determination to keep the edges and corners even with the current.

Judge's comment

When I hear Furoshiki, I think of my grandmother’s Furoshiki in purple and bright red gradations. I used that typical Furoshiki gradation for this pattern while creating a more contemporary image by the combination of color schemes and geometric shapes. With a hint of traditional Furoshiki, this beautiful design will be loved anywhere in the world.

Title:Floating jellyfish

Creator:

Concept:Thank you for choosing my work among many submissions. I drew this thinking about the jellyfish floating in the water at te aquarium. You can hang it on the wall or from the ceiling as part of the interior, or use it to wrap your clothes. Let your imagination float and wander freely just like jellyfish.

Judge's comment

This artist turned jellyfish floating deep under the sea into a Furoshiki design. The texture of the brush strokes are both cooling and full of life. If you put it on the wall, it might look like you have a little aquarium in the room.

Creator:atsushi kuba

Concept:Thank you very much for choosing my work. I ventured and arranged collages of 3D digital graphics all over, which is clearly quite far from the typical idea of Furoshiki design. Carry it around with you in your bag or by tying it on the handle of your purse as a nice decoration, and you can use it as a scarf, an eco bag, or any other way you please. It can also be a nice tapestry to adorn your room.

Judge's comment:

The surrealistic digital collage design seems as if it was just popped out of the chaos of the worldwide web. This novel-looking Furoshiki will also add great accent to the interior if you hang it on the wall or from the ceiling. I would love to see it in your room!

Title:KANJI-LINE"髭フラ”:003

Creator:MILTZ

Concept: Thank you very much for the award. This design is called “Hige-fulage Furoshiki; Nishikigoi.” I make a variety of graphic designs using “hige-moji,” or “whiskered brush strokes,” which has traditionally been used for labels for sake, signs for historical Japanese restaurants, and happi coats for festivals. I have only uploaded a few, but I would love it if you would take a look at my website. https://miltz.myportfolio.com/

Judge's comment

The design uses the elements of powerful Edo-moji strokes and turn them into a kind of camouflage. While it has an air of graffiti art, the combination of gold, red, and black also gives a celebratory feeling.

Title:

Creator:

Concept: Thank you for selecting “Dancing Pict Furoshiki” from a number of entries, and thank you very much! I want to wrap and spread while being invited to the pictogram.

Judge's comment

I struggled with the design that the pattern was formed in any direction and in any shape, not just up, down, left and right, but also diagonally. The pictogram, which is also a representative of universal design that transcends the barriers of language and national culture, fits perfectly with the concept of motifs and designs.

Title:Let's Brainstorming!

Creator:張例等

Concept:

Judge's comment

While there were many entries that effectively used geometric figures, this work had the message of "Let's Brainstorming!" Is the motif inspired by a new idea drawn in the furoshiki? You can enjoy various expressions depending on how you fold.

Title:ふ

Creator: yuki goto

Concept: I always end up creating something weird, and it makes me want to give a big sigh. I hope, though, my work will give many people some cute giggles. Thank you very much for choosing my work.

Judge's comment

I think this is the idea that exemplifies the idea of “playful furoshiki”. Taking the initial character of “fu”roshiki and turning it into a graphic pattern is quite smart and elegant.

Title:

Creator:Sara Shimizu

Concept:Thank you for choosing my work. I decided not to have much of a plan, but just to enjoy drawing the plants of my imagination. I’m happy you liked it. I’d love to start creating designs for more everyday products in the future.

Judge's comment

The plants in calm, cooling colors, outlined in white on the water-surface background look really nice, just like stencil dyeing print for kimono. With a touch of Japanese-ness, the design will suit Western outfits like a simple dress. The imaginary plants, which are so elaborate they might as well actually exist somewhere, are fascinating, too. I would love to wrap this Furoshiki on my purse as a casual fashion statement, showing whichever plants I feel like that day.

Title:

Creator:

Concept: I am honored to share the work with you, and I have repeatedly confirmed that email several times after receiving the award. Loofah was a design assignment for me. I was not sure about it, so I never made it public, but I took him to the world now; I really appreciate that I did n’t give up a few minutes ago, but I shared it boldly.

Judge's comment

The choice of color matches well with the subject of “絲瓜絡”. It creates a refreshing and homie feeling.

Title:

Creator:

Concept:I let out a loud happy scream on a train platform when you called me and told me that I was getting this wonderful award. Thank you so much! This design comes from my simple, quite childlike imagination that made mountains look like rice balls while I was drawing them with an empty stomach. I do value the child in me whenever I create something. I hope this Furoshiki will put a smile on many people’s faces and brighten up their day.

Judge's comment

This idea is very refreshing and cute. The onigiri among a sea of mountains creates a perfect context as an idea for Furoshiki that makes me want to go to picnic.

Title:

Creator:

Concept: I’ve always wanted to draw rice terraces of Japan. I also wanted to see what it would look like if the scene was set in the sunset time. I finished the design in a few days, working on it bits by bits. Then, I learned about the competition and got excited again with the idea of turning it into Furoshiki! I stirred up my courage and sent this work in. I’m really happy to get the award. Thank you very much

Judge's comment

The country landscape that probably exists in everyone’s childhood memories evoke nostalgia in us, something along “the summer I spent exploring the hills in the back of my grandma’s house.” I thought a piece of painting might not be very suitable for a Furoshiki design since parts of the painting will be hidden when wrapped around something. However, this work will look beautiful from any angle, with its playful touches and details. You can even enjoy it two different ways; a landscape painting when spread out and an abstract painting when wrapped.
