Vaia Gkerliotou

Architect/ designer

Vaia Gkerliotou is a Greece based architect and computational designer. She is the founder of @VaiaGkerliotou architect \\designer a professional architectural design practice in Greece and Research experimental Design Laboratory on interactive and computational geometry, and is researching on testing of smart materials for human scale use. She is a Researcher at rat[LAB] and is currently focussed on developing a research on adaptive skins for human body.

She brings together designers, scientists and technologists with the fashion industry to explore emerging ideas at the intersection of fashion and technology. As a pioneer in the digital fashion design space, this practice is primarily concerned with the wearable applications of computationally-based design methodologies and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. Her designs always express an interest on the natural forms by producing flexible 3D printed fabrics that move like traditional fabric. Through innovative experiments with materials, techniques and technologies she test the body language.

She has served as a juror at Central Saint Martins University, London and has taught at workshops at RoboFold where she worked as an computational designer. She has previously worked at [Ay]AStudio Paris, developing a research on digital patterns and textiles. She has been a tutor assistant in many international workshops such as: ‘Agenda’ AA Visiting School in Paris focusing on Catwalk Design, ‘Façade Design’ RoboFold Workshop on Computer Aided Manufacture Robotics focusing on curved folding techniques and digital fabrication and ‘Advanced Architectural Design‘ X|Atelier focusing on strategies for developing new spatial organization by digital tooling. In 2011 as Sarcha ‘s associate, she has been shortlisted at the ‘Resourceful Architect Day of Ideas’ by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and The Architecture Foundation. Her work has been published in the Architectural Journal magazine, amongst other web and print media.
