Please describe the concept of your artwork in 2000 words.
The Reef is a large scale installation inspired by the coral reefs, cross-stitched through with colourful and fluorescent ropes. The main objective of this installation is to enhance the current wire fence for the skateboarding community in the area. The existing wire fence is a barrier to prevent the skateboard from rolling down to the main road.
The elements of coral reefs are to further remind us of the importance of protecting our underwater creatures.
At the same time, the installation increases the curiosity of the people passing through, and create awareness of the current activities going on at the park. This installation would be another stepping stone for the park improvement.
We aim to make a park more than just a park.
We seek solace by going to our neighbourhood parks in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. On some days of the week, we packed our lunch and eat in the park; resulting from the no dine-in regulation during the Covid pandemic. During our visits, we had ideas and conversations on the benefit of having a public art intervention going in the neighbourhood park especially in this kind of time. Park is potentially more than just a park and should be infused with public art.
We love public art installation because we can enjoy it while living our regular daily lives without having to go someplace special to experience it. We want to infuse colours and patterns to the places we live, which contribute to improving the parks aesthetics. We intend to add crawling flower plants that give natural grounding to the installation and help them grow together over time. On the same note, we believe in the community building and place-making benefits of public art. The Reef will be a strong statement towards the neighbourhood.
Finally, we intend to expose strings art installations that could spark creativity among younger generations. -
