Please describe the concept of your artwork in 2000 words.
B-Loom is a multi-purpose installation where people can gather, meet up, create events, and the public can weave recycle yarns materials into the loom. We also conduct workshops in the pavilion, educating the visitors on strings art. B-Loom adds plenty of bright colours to the alleyway of Kwai Chai Hong in Kuala Lumpur.
Located in the Kwai Chai Hong which is popularly known for Lorong Panggung, the area becomes an important node and soon prominent landmark in the area. Reviving the back lanes area into an accessible public space where artists and makers have been commissioned to create murals, art installations and public screenings. It is a breathing space with endless possibilities.
The idea behind B Loom is to create a public strings installation that exhibits various techniques of strings art such as macrame knotting, weaving, latch hooking, and cross-stitching. We created a Pavillion structure made from repurposed constructions scaffoldings that follow the urban language of the space which was a back alley of post-colonial shophouses.
We aim to create a strings hut where events and moments happen. The colour was inspired by coral reefs that bring out vibrant colours. when they are healthy and full of nutrients. The colour palette is used to evoke cheerful feelings. When we see cheerful colours, it makes us happy. We did most of the artwork and string works back in our studio. Most of the artworks were created with various types of yarns, strings and recycled fabrics. During the creation process, friends and families donate and contribute their recycled fabrics to use to be used in the artwork. We received numerous types of fabrics like local Malaysia batik patterns, cotton, wool and silk.
After the installation is finished, almost all of the individual artworks are repurposed into various usage. We used it for weddings and events backdrop. We grow crawlers on the cross stitch wire mesh that serves as a partition in the garden that grows together with the ecosystem. We did see birds come picking up loose strings from the installation to be used for their nests. It was a wonderful moment to be able to contribute to another life. We did donate to a beach surfer cafe our macrame roof which gives a strong character to the place and also as shade for the outdoor seatings. The main structure scaffolding was dismantled and reused as a green balcony structure in our friends' apartment. They grow edibles and flowers on their balcony. -
