City of Sunset (Japan Human's City)

This is one of the environment designs that I've done for my collaboration project Bakuton. I enjoyed creating this piece because it was a new breakthrough for me as our project involved both Japan and Western art style. When I'm creating this piece, I've aimed to create a beautiful scenery with a sunset shined and reflected clearly on the city as this is one of the important key moment in our story. I tried to break away from my own comfort zone and twist the angle so it looks dynamic and unique. A big contrast with Youkai's village, I make human city carry a more desaturated colour to create a more boring, lifeless and hazy atmosphere. To make it natural, I put some hanging clothes in between the building to make it connected and created a beautiful rim light on it, I let the building faded off far away and slowly connected to the sunlight to enhance the depth of field. Besides, I also left some empty space on the left side to let the audience's eye have enough breathing space to focus and I used lens flare to make the lighting more dramatic and attractive. To make the design more storytelling, I tried to add in some Koi fish kite , family emblem, flyers, lanterns and pole with road sign to enhance the Japan tradition and culture as well.
