Feral Cattle in Remnant Ecology
The design aims to resolve the constantly occurring collisions between feral cattle and human activities at Sai Kung to make the place more harmonious and sustainable. The population of feral cattle is constantly increasing at Sai Kung and the AFCD department is putting hard efforts to manage them in a humane way. However, it is not always possible for the AFCD cattle management team to handle all the population of cattle individuals. Currently, as local residents view them as obstacles, no one cares if they are left injured or killed, and sometimes cattle are even endangering humans too. As the population grows, the frequency of these collisions will rapidly increase, and the solution is urgent to provide a safer place for residents, tourists, and feral cattle.
The project focuses on amplifying the benefits of cattle ecology with public engagement. All the feral cattle will be relocated to the island located on the eastern side of Sai Kung, where it has abundant resources and has a capacity to accommodate a large population of cattle. The island itself is connected to various recreational activities and travel spots. Thus the place has a high potential to attract people and naturally bring more interaction between humans and cattle. The implementation of biogas planter using cattle manure will solve the issues of lacking energy sources in a rural area like Sai Kung. A tour of the island will educate and raise awareness of the benefits the cattle bring to our living, and it will gradually improve people's attitude and perception of feral cattle. Therefore, there is stronger social cohesion in the community and better management through increasing public engagement. The ultimate goal of the project is to create a continuous system that improves human attitude and perception toward cattle and to provide a harmonious and sustainable place for both cattle and humans.
