Kemijen Narrative (2016)

Craft Art / Graphic Recording / Sculpture / Others
The Damar Kurung lantern installation beside the Banger river, Cillosari, east of the city of Semarang is an artistic production by Novan Effendy after a short residency in this area. This project was conceptualized by Ahmad Khairudin, an Indonesia-based curator with involving the children of TPQ Bustanul Qur'an. Kemijen village has complex problems, especially related to the issue of tidal flooding. Talking about flooding (rob) does not only talk about the condition of Kampong Kemijen, but also the failure of the city system for years to overcome drainage and environmental problems.

Novan Effendy invited a local kids to share a story about the environment, where they are living, to visualize frequent flooding in this region. But instead of talking about flooding, 'Penta K Labs: Kemijen Narrative’ invites the audience and artists to talk about the wealth of the village and the inspirational things behind all the suffering that has plagued the residents. That even in the most desperate of circumstances they still have great pride and endurance. This capital can be a model for participatory sustainable regional development.

This visual art project was inspired by the art exhibition “Tengok Kampung Bustaman” which was previously successfully developed into an art program since 2014 by Hysteria-Semarang's based collective. Penta - K (campus, community, village, city, us) is a biennial visual project organized by Hysteria. Penta K Labs is intended to be a hub between campuses, communities, villages, cities, and us; bringing the artistic praxis and intellectual movement closer to urban or residential issues with an emphasis on artistic production.
