Ghost fishing gear is the deadliest form of marine plastic as it unselectively catches wildlife, entangling marine life, subjecting them to a slow and painful death through exhaustion and suffocation.
Hibāng collaborated with the plastic manufacturer to reproduce the nylon from the discarded fishing net collected by fishermen. We redesign a stylish, durable, flexible, and super comfortable eyewear made of a single material with no composite material that could be recycled with low energy consumption. We offer the low friction trade-in mode to encourage users to trade in the eyewear they don’t use anymore. Users can use the RE-PP glasses case as packaging to send back. The goal is to re-design a real sustainable daily lifestyle with a feasible and low-friction approach. -

Special Prize Question 1: How does your project or idea make use of local resources, such as materials and knowledge, to tackle its challenge?
Hibāng collaborated with the plastic manufacturer to reproduce the nylon from the discarded fishing net collected by
Taiwan fishermen. We redesign a stylish, durable, flexible, and super comfortable eyewear made of a single material with no composite material that could be recycled with low energy consumption by the local glasses manufacturer in Tainan, Taiwan. Somehow the physical property of RE-nylon reproduced from the discarded fishing net is not well as the virgin one, therefore we modified the material and adjust the injection parameters for making it as if made of virgin material. -
Special Prize Question 2: How does your project or idea sustain its activities through the involvement of the local community?
In the name of hope, Hibāng comes from the homonym of "fishing net" and "hope" in Taiwanese. Hibāng establishes a stylish life with both sustainability and quality. With Hibāng, people can implement a sustainable life with no compromise on appropriate life.
The first series of 3 products are designed for everyday use that present classic, simple, and stylish. For this series, we redesign a new modern style referring to the classic eyewear style like full-round, aviator, and square. 3 models are named after Taiwan's outlying islands in the Taiwanese language and printed on the temples in low profile. Via the characteristics of recycled nylon material, it adopts a matte surface treatment, which feels smooth and not easy to scratch. There are 3 color options, nude, black, and dark green. Except for 2 small metal screws, the whole frame is made of a single material to reduce recycling power consumption. -

Hibāng also built a circular system to ensure every eyewear will be recycled when its life ends. We encourage users to trade in the eyewear they don’t use anymore. We will tear it down and then reproduce the new material again.
