Yukizome Project

This project approaches the social problems of snow country through the technique of YUKIZOME.
The project consists of five aspects: art, design, crafts, science, and community.

YUKIZOME is a unique technique of dyeing paper and cloth by spraying dye onto fallen snow.
Snow changes its shape depending on the temperature, humidity, wind, and topography, so each time and place has its own unique characteristics, and unique shapes emerge.

What are the social problems facing snow country?
During my stay in Hokkaido, I heard many negative comments from people actually living in the area about snow, such as "snow removal is hard," "there are areas where snow removal is not possible due to insufficient regional budgets," and "it interferes with normal life. Data also shows that a large amount of money is spent on snow removal, and conversely, there are concerns about the damage to the tourism industry due to the lack of snow caused by global warming in recent years. This problem is not only faced by Japan, but also by snow-bound countries around the world.
In the future, we will continue our activities to support the new culture of the snow country and snowfall areas, and to help raise environmental awareness through our works.

The five perspectives that make up the YUKIZOME Project
■Art
Using Japanese paper and cloth decorated with "YUKIZOME", we will express the beauty of snow through "two-dimensional", "three-dimensional", and "installation", and create opportunities for people to become aware of snow and think about nature.

■Design
The YUKIZOME pattern will be incorporated into T-shirts and other everyday items to express a new beauty different from that of snow as a landscape or as seen through a microscope.

■Crafts
Collaborate YUKIZOME with traditional crafts born in the local climate to create works of art that are unique to the region.

■Science
Scientific experiments have shown that snow crystals change their shape under the influence of temperature and humidity. Even in the natural environment where the actual dyeing was carried out, differences in the finished product were observed depending on the local wind, topography, and the way the light entered the area.
By recording the location, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and other factors at the time of production, objective elements can be incorporated into the work, adding not only visual beauty but also a scientific basis.
By building on this process, we aim to increase the value of the work.

■Community
The workshops and the dedicated community website will be used to create a "broad and thin" community.
This is because a movement can be started in many places by hundreds of people, even if they are in the minority at the beginning.
There are two elements to the site.
(1) A recipe for the YUKIZOME method (text, photos, videos, etc.) so that anyone can do snow YUKIZOME.
(2) A bulletin board where people who have actually done YUKIOZME can freely post and share their YUKIZOME creations and ideas for using YUKIZOME.
