山口県で創業５７年目を迎える廃棄物処理企業、中特ホールディングス。
ゴミ収集から始まり、時代に沿った地域の廃棄物課題に取り組んできた企業が、持続可能な文化がスタンダードとなる社会を育むためのプロジェクトとして「COIL Upcycle Art Contest」を発足しました。
人の活動が地球環境に甚大な影響を及ぼしたとされる今の時代。世界各地で循環型経済の実現が叫ばれている今もなお、大量生産と大量廃棄は続いています。２０５０年には世界の廃棄物の
発生量が今の２倍になるという現実に私たちはどのように向き合うべきでしょうか。
廃棄物課題について人々の価値観をアップデートさせることは人類にとって有益です。アートには０から１を生み出すきっかけである「問い」のエッセンスが詰まっています。私たちは廃棄物アート
を創り鑑賞する機会を設けることで、問いによって環境課題を自分ごと化し、持続可能な仕様に文化をアップデートするきっかけを提供します。
今後はこの取り組みのように廃棄物のプロが地域の文化プロデューサーとして、文化的側面からも環境課題と向き合い、地域市民に豊富な体験の場を提供していく取り組みが全国に増えていく
事を願っています。
Chutoku Holdings, a waste disposal company celebrating it’s 57th anniversary in Yamaguchi prefecture. This waste management company that has been working on local waste issues that are very much in line with the times has launched the “COIL Upcycle Art Contest”. This project fosters a society where sustainable culture is a standard of the culture.
Mass production along with mass disposal continue even now regardless of the realization of a circular economy and even while it is being called out all over the world. How should we face the reality that the amount of waste generated in the world will double by 2050?
Updating people’s values on waste issues is very much a necessity to humanity. Art is packed with these thought provoking “questions” that will be an addition to those who are concerned from 0 to 1. By creating and appreciating waste art, we will make environmental issues our own by asking questions and providing opportunities to bring up our culture to sustainable specifications.
In the future, as we continue in this initiative, waste professionals will act as local cultural producers to face environmental issues from a cultural perspective and provide local citizens with an abundance of experience. My hope is that this will increase throughout the country. -

公募展のタイトルにもあるCOILという言葉には特別な意味が込められています。創造性・観察力・独自性・ライフハックという意味の他に、地域社会が抱える様々な課題に対し地域の静脈企業が
主導して循環型経済実現のためのRedesignの渦を巻き起こして行きたいという意志が込められています。
主催企業である中特ホールディングスが位置する山口県周南市は戦後から重化学工業を主要産業とし、大きな企業と共に経済発展を成してきたという歴史があります。中特ホールディングスも
創業以来、リサイクルや廃棄物処理など静脈に関わる部分でそういった企業との協働し地域を支えてきました。『ゴミのことはまず中特ホールディングスに相談しよう』と言ってもらえるほど地元の
静脈産業に深く携わる企業だからこそ、声を上げていくことについての使命感を感じています。
地域社会に存在する仕組みや体制には、必ずその地の文化が大きく影響を与えています。社会の基盤である文化という側面から、廃棄物アートによって地域に存在する既存概念や習慣に「問
い」と「議論」を積極的に発生させることで、関わりのある地域住民や自治体、企業に対して新たな文化創造を促す存在となれたらと考えています。
The word COIL, which is also in the title of the exhibition, has a special meaning. With the acroynm of Creativity, Observation, Identity and Lifehack it has so much more meaning with the will to spur a desire of redesign for the realization and change of circular economy. This will be led by local companies to address various issues faced by the local community.
Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where Chutoku Holdings, the host company, is located has a history of economic development with large companies. Its main industries since the post war period are metal and chemical industries. Since its founding, Chutoku Holdings has supported the local community by collaborating with these companies in areas related to recycling and waste disposal. As a company deeply involved in the local industrial industry, I feel a sense of mission to raise my voice because it is a company that is deeply involved in the local industries to the extent that people say, “Let’s consult Chutoku Holdings about waste management.”
Local culture always has a great influence on the structures and systems that exist in these local communities. From the aspect of culture, which is the foundation of society, by actively generating “questions” and “discussions” about existing concepts that exist in the region through waste we will provide opportunities for local residents, local governments, and companies to interact with us. I would like to become a presence that encourages the creation of new culture. -

地球と人の新たな文化を探究する廃棄物アートの公募展/Public Exhibit of Waste Art Exploring the New Culture of Earth & People.
※廃棄物アートは英訳でWaste Art であるが、当プロジェクトでは廃棄物の価値に注目するという意味で'Upcycle Art'という名称を採用している。
『持続可能な世界観が文化のスタンダードとなるような社会にしたい』という思いからスタートした、廃棄物で創る現代アートの公募展を運営するプロジェクト。文化とは、民族や社会の風習・伝統・思考方法・価値観などの総称で、世代を通じて伝承されていくものを意味する。今人類が直面している数多くの環境にまつわる課題たちを本当に解決させ、ポジティブな未来を創るには、解決方法を選択し実現していくことのできる文化の浸透が不可欠ではないかというアイデアから着想した
。
本プロジェクトは、不要とされ捨てられるはずのもの（廃棄物ともいう）を用いてつくられた廃棄物アートの公募展を通して、環境課題に直面する人類がアートをきっかけに思考し始めることを目標とした文化的探究プロジェクトである。文化的探究の第一歩として、現在は現代アートを用いた「問い」と「対話」を発生させる試みを行っている。
現在MOMAなど著名な美術館などが公式プログラムとして取り入れている美術教育カリキュラム「対話型鑑賞（Visual Thinking Strategies）」などによって問いや対話の教育的効果は既に実証されつつある。現代アートを創る人も観る人もが「問題提起力」「観察力」「想像力」「批判力」」「対話力」といった思考回路を循環させるため、固定概念を脱した新たな解釈や世界観が生み出されるこ
とが期待されている。
本来現代アートとは、創作家と鑑賞者の間で生まれた問いから始まった対話によって作品が完成するアートの形のことである。問いや対話の中身によって作品が完成する形が異なり多様性が許容された領域であるため、廃棄物アートの公募展においても創作者と鑑賞者の対話の到着点を探すのではなく、対話から批判や議論が生まれ、それがさらなる問いと対話を生んでいくという緩やかな探究の旅を娯楽として楽しんでもらえたらと願っている。
また運営するにあたって、現代アートを創ったことが無い人や観たことが無い人、環境課題に関心が無い人達をも巻き込めるプロジェクトでありたいとの考えから、主にSNSやオフラインイベントを
通して創作者や鑑賞者とコミュニケーションを取れるような体制づくりを実施している。“環境課題は人類全員が当事者である“ということを意識しつつ、歩み寄ることのできる運営体制を目指して
いる。
このプロジェクトが実際に環境課題の改善や人の思考や行動に影響を及ぼせるかについて、現時点では実験段階にある。これからの活動によってさらに多くの人と対話を通して関わることで、まだ
部外にいる人との対話のきっかけを後押しできたらと考えている。実際にこうしている間にもClimate Clock（温暖化が進んだ、 もう後戻りできない地球になってしまう「締め切り」の時間を示す
時計）は刻一刻と進んでいる。何もせずにその時を迎えるのではなく、たとえ大きなインパクトを残せないとしても、今出来ることをしていきたい。

“The sustainable world view should be the standard of the culture"
That statement is the beginning of this project to manage a public exhibit of contemporary art created from waste. Culture is a general term for customs, traditions, ways of thinking, and values of an ethnic group or society passed down from generation to generation. Because culture is passed down it has inspired the idea that in order to truly solve the numerous environmental issues, mankind must face the issues today in order to create a positive future. It is imperative to implement solutions and permeate these solutions throughout this culture today.
This project aims to encourage people being faced with environmental issues to start thinking, using a public exhibit of upcycle art which is creating art with the medium of things that should be thrown away or are deemed unnecessary (AKA waste). One goal of this project is that it would become a cultural exploration project. The first step in cultural exploration is cultivating and nurturing “questions” and “dialogue” using contemporary art. The educational effect of questions and dialogue is already being demonstrated by the art education curriculum “Visual Thinking Strategies” which is currently being adopted as an official program by famous museums such as MOMA. It allows creators and viewers of contemporary art to spark their critical thinking, spark thinks like the “ability to pose problems”, “observe”, “imagine”, “critique”, and “dialogue”, and see new interpretations and worldviews that break away from stereotypical expectations and the norm.
Contemporary art is a form of art that provokes a dialogue and questions between the creator and viewer upon completion. The form of work differs and changes depending on the content of question, dialogue, and diversity in the given area. It is my hope that you enjoy and are entertained as criticism and debates arise and further questions and dialogue are opened up.
In the spirit of contemporary art while managing this project we would like to involve those who have never created contemporary art, seen contemporary art, and even people who are not interested in environmental issues. We want to create a system that allows communication between creators and viewers especially through Social Media and in person events. We are aiming for a management system that allows us to be flexible while keeping in mind that “environmental issues involve all humans”.
We are currently in the experimental stages to see if the project can actually improve environmental issues and influence people’s thinking and behavior. By engaging in dialogue with more people through different events and activities, I hope to encourage dialogue with people who are still outside of the department. The climate clock (the clock that shows the earth’s “deadline” to an irreversible global warming) continues to tick every moment. With that I want to do all I can do today, regardless of if a big impact can or cannot be made rather than waiting and doing nothing and affecting no change.
