これまで郵便局の新築は主に鉄⾻造で⾏ってきましたが、「環境配慮型郵便局」として ⽊造郵便局の建設を推進していくこととなりました。

　⽊材の炭素循環として⻑く⼤切に使われる建物となるために、その地域の誇りとなり、愛着を持たれるようになる必要があると考え「みんなで作るみんなの郵便局」をコンセプトとしました。

　外装材もサスティナブルでかつ地域に貢献できる材料を使えないかと考え、地元千葉県産の杉板を使った「焼杉」を使⽤することを提案。すると協⼒の輪が広がり、最終的には地元の親⼦約60⼈、周辺郵便局の局⻑40⼈、ボランティア多数と⼀緒に伝統的な⽅法で製作することとなりました。

　県産材を確保し、出来上がりの品質を確保すること、⽕を使う作業を⼦ども達と安全 に⾏うことなど、多くの課題を、教育委員会や地元の材⽊商、施⼯者等、地域のたくさ んの⼈たちが協⼒し、みんなの郵便局をみんなで作り上げました。

　「持続可能な未来を、地域と⼀緒に作っていく」これからの郵便局の姿勢を⽰すプロジェクトとなりました。

Japan Post Office has mainly constructed post offices with steel frames lately, but we decided to promote the construction of wooden made Post Office as "environmentally friendly Post Office”.

We hold up the concept of "Post Office for everyone, built by everyone," based on the belief that the Post Office building needs to be a source of pride of the community and to obtain affection by the community, so that it can be used carefully for a long time.

Thinking a sustainable material for the exterior walls that would contribute to the community, we proposed to use "Yakisugi" (burned cedar boards) made from locally produced cedar boards in Chiba Prefecture. We got a lot of help, eventually about 60 local parents and children, 40
post office directors, and many volunteers joined together to the fabrication workshop to make Yakisugi in a traditional way.

People in the community, including the board members of education, local lumber merchants, and building constructors, worked together with us to create a post office for everyone, overcoming challenges such as securing prefectural lumber, ensuring the quality of the finished product, and ensuring safety of the children working with fire.

This project demonstrates the Japan Post Office's commitment to "building a sustainable future together with the community”.

外装材にはサスティナブルで耐久性のあるものを検討し、「焼杉」を採⽤しました。 「焼杉」は杉板の表⾯を燃やして炭化させることで、防腐性や防⾍性を持たせた⻄⽇本の伝統⼯芸で、しっかり作れば 50 年以上持つ材料です。
　地元である千葉県は江⼾時代から林業が盛んでしたが、近年は⼿⼊れされずに放置された⼈⼯林が増加し、台⾵で⼤きな被害が起きています。
　⽊を植え、⽊を育て、⽊と伐り、⽊を使う…そしてまた⽊を植えるという「森の循環」。地元の杉を使った「焼杉づくり」を地元の⼦ども達と⾏うことは、地域で地域の森の循環を回すことにつながります。
　また、建物を⼀緒に作ることで、この郵便局に愛着を持ち、植えた⽊が伐採期を迎えるまでの60年以上に渡って地域の郵便局として親しみ愛され、⼤切に利⽤される仕組みを試みました。

We chose a material "Yakisugi" (burned cedar board) for the exterior wall that was both sustainable and durable. Yakisugi is a traditional construction method in western Japan, which is to burn the surface of cedar boards to carbonize, making them preservative and insect resistant. Yakisugi can last for more than 50 years.

In Chiba Prefecture, where the Post Office locates, forestry was prosperous since the Edo era. However, in recent years, the number of artificial forests left unattended has been increasing, and typhoons have caused serious damage to these forests.

The "forest cycle" involves the process of planting trees, growing trees, cutting trees and using trees, and then planting trees again. Making "Yakisugi" with local children using local cedar trees leads for the community to turn that cycle of the local forest. Also, by building the Post Office together, we attempted to create a relationship whereby people become attached to this post office, and continue attached as the local Post Office for more than the “forest cycle” of 60 years.
