「庭と交渉する」は作家個人の庭で現在も行われているリサーチプロジェクトである。プロジェクトは昆虫のための庭作りという、既存知識の実践から始まるが、後に作家が庭での出来事に向き合いそれに逆らわずに対話していくような姿勢に変わる。自然支配的な技術の開発ではなく、生態系の一部となる技術は在り得るのか、という問いをもとにプロジェクトは進められる。
作家は庭に住むツツハナバチの住処を作る経験を通して、彼女らと時間・場所・マテリアルを共有するアクティビティを「ハチと行う陶芸」として構想、模索する。このハチは粘土質の土で巣の内壁や蓋を作る。このアクティビティでは人間とハチは同じ土を共有しつつ、人間は陶芸を、ハチは営巣活動を行う。試作されたろくろはハチの住処にあるセンサーと連動し、ハチが巣穴から飛び立つと回転を止め、人間は陶芸ができなくなる。その間にハチは土の積まれたろくろの上から巣の材料を持って行き、人間はそれが終わるのを待つことになる。こうして技術は自然に流れる様々な時間やリズムを浮き彫りにし、人間中心的視点を省みるようにデザインできるのではないか。とはいえ、実際にはハチは庭より外から土を持ち込み共有することはなかった。これが用意された土の構成あるいは庭の環境によるものなのか、それを探るため庭を改良していく作家の感覚は、ハチ視点の環境の捉え方に近づいているかもしれない。

“Negotiating with the Garden” is an ongoing project pursued in the designer’s garden. The project started with making a pollinator-friendly garden where he applied existing knowledge to practice but transitioned to a more dialogical process of reacting to the events and surrendering to nature. The project is explored through his inquiry: what would be the technology that becomes a part of the ecosystem, moving away from our mastery of nature through technology?
Through his experience of building a beehouse for mason bees who use mud for the nest material, the designer currently explores the idea of “making pottery with bees”, the activity of sharing time, place, and material with the bees. In this activity, a human and bees share the same mud, where the human makes pottery with it, while the bees use it for their nest. A pottery wheel designed for this activity, connected to the sensors on the beehouse, serves as a mud-foraging station for the bees by stopping its rotation when bees are out for collection. The wheel disrupts the human's pottery-making, making them wait for the bees to collect mud. This suggests the possibility of designing technology to surface various natural temporalities and to challenge human-centricity. Thus far in the project, the bees always found mud outside the garden and did not share the one prepared. The designer continues to update the garden, wondering if it is about the soil composition or the environment in the garden. Perhaps the designer’s perspective on evaluating surroundings is converging with that of the bees.

For People:
本作ではスケールの大きくなりがちな生態系の問題を、個人の庭という身近なスケールよりアプローチしている。「ハチと行う陶芸」では、陶芸のしやすい土とハチの好みの土の違いや、ハチが採取したがるろくろ上のオブジェクトの形状などを探るといった視点から人間とハチの接点を考えるきっかけが生まれる。自然・資源を占有せずに人間以外と共有すること、その環境を用意すること、等の現代社会に必要な生態系ケアの視点を、遊び心のあるアクティビティを通じて伝えていくことができる可能性があると考える。

For Planet:
人間は近代化の過程で自然とますます隔てられてきた。特に先進国や西洋化された都市環境では、その切っても切れない生態系の繋がりを日常で知ることは学術的知識を通じた行為になってきている。本作はこういった体験と切り離された学習を超え、人間の体を通じて自然と関わることによる認識論的重要性を説く。この点において、本作は直接的に解決策を与えるよりも、人々の視点を動かすきっかけとなり得るものである。

For Profit:
人間の生活向上のためにデザインをする上で、人間以外の生物や環境を気にかけないことはもはや不可能だろう。本作は人間中心主義の視点を省みることを通じて、生産性・効率重視といった価値観とは異なる技術開発の視点を探索している。

For People:
The project approaches the large-scale ecological issues from a more familiar scale and context of a personal garden. “Making pottery with bees” can raise inquiries, such as the difference between pottery-suited soil and bee-preferred soil and the shape of pottery for encouraging the bees to forage mud. Such perspectives allow us to wonder about meeting points between humans and bees. The project has the potential of playfully educating people with the ecological caring perspectives of sharing nature and resources and making a suitable environment for it.

For Planet:
Humans have been increasingly separated from nature due to modernization. Especially in developed countries and Westernized urban environments, it has become only through scientific knowledge that we learn about the ecological interdependencies among entities. This project goes beyond such learning without experience and addresses the epistemological importance of learning through interacting with nature. In such a sense, this project could provoke people to change their perspectives instead of giving direct solutions to our problems.

For Profit:
In our current situation, it would be impossible not to care for nonhuman lives and environments to improve our quality of life. Through reflecting on Anthropocentrism, the project seeks alternative perspectives on technological development that are different from the prioritization of productivity and efficiency.

人間にとってありふれた土でも、そこに陶芸の可能性を見出せば視点は変わり、それがハチの生存に重要だと知れば人間の文化以上の価値を見出すことができる。私たちが日々暮らしている中で目もくれないようなありふれた人工物や自然物も、おそらく何者かの住処であったり栄養分であったりするだろう。これらに気付くことは例えば微生物を使った資源の分解や循環などの技術的発展に役立つかもしれないが、本作品ではこの「気付く」こと以上に、自らをその資源利用のネットワークに組み込ませてみることを実験している。これにより、資源の調達や分配、その使い道といった流れの一端を人間も担い得ることができ、生態系に組み込まれていることの意義を経験を通じて感じられるのではないかと考える。こういった点で、本作は人間－非人間あるいは自然－文化の二分理論から生まれてしまった人間優位主義的な視点を排除することを目指している。

We may change the way we look at soil if we see its suitability to pottery. We can even find a value in the same soil beyond human culture if we learn that the soil can be an important material for thriving of certain bees. Mundane artificial and natural objects that we overlook every day are also possibly habitats or food for some organisms. Noticing such things might lead to development of technology, for example, using microorganisms for decomposition and circulation of materials. This project aims beyond such “noticing” and experiment with embedding the designer himself in the network of material circulation. This way, human can be a part of the flow from acquiring and distributing the material towards its usage, through which you could feel what it is to be involved in the ecosystem. In such a sense, the project aims to refuse the human superiority resulting from the dichotomy of human-nonhuman or nature-culture.

人間の都市開発によって色々な生物の住処や生存に必要な資源や生物多様性が失われている。泥を共有するアイデアを通してデザイナーが自分の庭をツツハナバチにも住みやすい場所へと変えていくように、周りの生物と資源の循環に目を向けるだけでも、人間主体の市街地に他の生物が共存できるような環境づくりを後押しするきっかけとなり得る。庭やベランダといった人間生活のために設計された空間に他の生物が利用できる何かを設けること、ったこれだけのことを多くの人が行うことで、分断化されがちな市街地の自然エリアが繋がりやすくなり、人間とそれ以外の生物からなる生態系を再生することができるかもしれない。

Urbanization has taken important habitats and resources away from many species, which has been decreasing the biodiversity. Just as this project demonstrates how the designer redesigns his garden to be more habitable for the mason bees through the idea of sharing the mud, attention to local lifeforms and the material circulation can promote people to reshape the human-centric environment to allow cohabitation. Placing something usable for nonhumans on your garden or balcony is a simple thing to do. Still, with collective effort, this could connect fragmented nature in the urban area and help regenerate a more-than-human ecosystem.

本作は個人の庭で行われ、誰にでも実践出来得るような活動を通してマテリアルの循環に焦点を当てている。陶芸という人間に馴染みのある活動を通してハチの活動リズムや土質に目を向けるといった文化と科学を繋ぐ本プロジェクトの視点は、人間の暮らしと接点のある点から生態系への興味を煽ることができ、市街地に住む人々が共存するあらゆる生物のことを学ぶための一つのアプローチとして捉えることもできる。また、本作が人間の鑑賞のための庭を作るという視点から、手を加えながら生態系に参加していくような庭作りの視点への移行を促すきっかけとなれば本望である。

The project focuses on the ecological circulation of material through a much more familiar and practicable example in a personal garden. The perspective of delving into the bees’ biorhythm and soil preferences through the practice of pottery connects culture and science. This can educate the public about ecology through familiar contexts overlapping with our daily life, which could be seen as a potential approach for those who live in the urban environment to learn about cohabiting species. Furthermore, I’d be glad if the project could encourage people to shift their perspectives on gardening from merely prioritizing human appreciation of its appearance towards regularly partaking in its ecosystem through designing.
