Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
The WasteShark is a revolutionary autonomous surface vessel (ASV) developed by RanMarine Technology to address plastic pollution and debris collection in water bodies. Designed to operate in marinas, ports, harbours, rivers, and other waterways, the WasteShark collects waste before it reaches the open ocean, protecting marine ecosystems and reducing the impact of waterborne pollutants. The project began in 2016 and has since expanded to cover regions across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond.
The WasteShark has been embraced globally, with successful implementations in ports and waterways, earning recognition for its effectiveness in environmental clean-up. With real-time data collection capabilities, the device provides continuous updates on water quality, enabling authorities to make data-driven decisions on water health and pollution prevention.
As the project grows, its impact is anticipated to deepen, helping industries and municipalities implement circular economy principles through waste management, ecosystem regeneration, and data sharing for more sustainable urban planning. -
How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
Planet: WasteShark directly supports the planet by removing plastic and debris from waterways, thus preventing these pollutants from entering oceans and endangering marine life. It also gathers water quality data, helping to monitor environmental health.
People: By cleaning public and commercial water spaces, WasteShark contributes to healthier communities. The device can be implemented in cities, ports, and industrial areas to improve water cleanliness, positively impacting local economies and public health.
Profit: WasteShark offers a cost-effective, scalable solution for municipalities, private companies, and environmental organisations to meet sustainability goals, thereby promoting circular business models focused on reducing waste and regenerating resources. -

Special Prize Question 1: "Empowering nature to create a new loop”: How does your work strengthen or support nature’s ability to capture and convert waste into valuable resources? How does your work advance industry practices by introducing nature-positive alternatives?
Empowering nature to create a new loop, WasteShark strengthens nature’s ability by actively removing waste from water ecosystems before it can break down into microplastics or release toxic chemicals. The collected waste is then processed or recycled, turning it into valuable resources. By preventing pollutants from damaging aquatic ecosystems, WasteShark helps maintain water’s natural ability to regenerate, while promoting circular practices in industries reliant on clean water, such as tourism and fisheries.

Special Prize Question 2: “Regenerating ecosystems”: In what inspiring ways does your work contribute to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems?
Regenerating ecosystems WasteShark plays an active role in ecosystem restoration by reducing the floating pollution burden on waterways, allowing ecosystems to stabilise and regenerate naturally. By targeting waste at its source, WasteShark improves water quality, helping aquatic and freshwater life flourish. It is a critical tool in the global effort to restore biodiversity in polluted water bodies, making a tangible contribution to the circular economy and ecosystem rehabilitation.

Special Prize Question 3: “Education and storytelling”: How does your work make complex bioeconomy concepts accessible and engaging?
Education and storytelling WasteShark simplifies complex bioeconomy concepts by providing an easy-to-understand solution that shows how technology can aid sustainability. Its operations and data collection are accessible to certified users including scientific organisations and NGOs offering educational opportunities for schools, communities, and industries to engage with real-world applications of circular economy principles. Through partnerships with local governments and NGOs, WasteShark helps tell the story of how small technological interventions can have significant environmental impacts.
