Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
Subs was founded around the time where the world was starting to pay attention to the global plastic pollution crisis. I was already in footwear manufacturing and got the idea to make a new brand that focused on using recycled materials and a footwear product that is completely recyclable.

How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
We empower the consumer with the ability to remove ocean trash through the purchase of our products making us a social enterprise that focuses on raising awareness to the plastic pollution problem and seeking solutions to using plastic waste rather than sending it to landfill or allowing it to reach the ocean in the first place.

Special Prize Question 1: "Empowering nature to create a new loop”: How does your work strengthen or support nature’s ability to capture and convert waste into valuable resources? How does your work advance industry practices by introducing nature-positive alternatives?
The loop we have created is enabling our customers to return their worn out pairs to us to be repurposed into new pairs, this process uses less water and turns specific plastic waste that we can use into something new and valuable, plus they get a discount for doing so which saves them money on wasteful products that don't last long and go straight to landfill when worn out.

Special Prize Question 2: “Regenerating ecosystems”: In what inspiring ways does your work contribute to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems?
By removing 1 kg of marine debris from global ocean ecosystems for every pair sold (and product, tees, bags that we make) we are reducing the harm done to local marine ecosystems that are polluted with plastic waste. Our contribution to the reduction of ocean trash means that is nearly 200,000 kg of marine debris not in the ocean because of us and our supporters and our impact can only grow when more and more people become aware of the ways they can contribute to this system we have in place. Our tee shirts use fishing nets that are purchased from fishermen so that they have an incentive not to dump them into the ocean creating even more plastic chaos, fishing nets comprise 46% of the world's ocean plastic, so systems like these are important to reduce the harm done by fishing nets and give fishermen a reason not to dump them in the first place.

Special Prize Question 3: “Education and storytelling”: How does your work make complex bioeconomy concepts accessible and engaging?

Subs Ltd New Zealand
Subs is a flip-flop company born in New Zealand, on a mission dedicated to fighting the global plastic crisis and helping to end plastic waste by producing all of our products from recycled materials using circular economy manufacturing practices.
We proudly uphold the use of recycled materials in all of our products. Plastic that is otherwise bound for landfills is one of the main components of recycled plastic that we currently source for Subs' jandals, totes, satchels & tees, mostly coming from commercial, post-consumer, and industrial plastic waste, plus some that we recover directly from the ocean that gets used in our tees.
We pledge to pull one kilo (2.20 lb) of marine debris (plastic waste) from global ocean ecosystems for every pair of Subs sold, our global impact to date:
198,148 kg (436,842 lb) of marine debris removed from our ocean ecosystems
15,046 kilograms (33,171 lb) of plastic waste recycled into Subs' signature products!
You can recycle your Subs when they are worn out beyond use. We have the ability to transform worn out returned pairs into new ones by shredding them to pieces and putting the materials back through the plastic injection machinery, giving the recycled materials yet another cycle of use.
