Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
The Patella Crescenda began as a response to a growing need for more sustainable and accessible ways to grow food at home. At House of Thol, we are always seeking to solve everyday challenges with eco-conscious designs, and we saw an opportunity to help people grow their own microgreens—nutrient-dense superfoods—without relying on soil or large outdoor spaces. The idea was to create a system that empowers users to take control of their food production, even within the confines of small kitchens, while keeping the process simple, clean, and sustainable.
We designed the Patella Crescenda to be easy to use and maintain. By using durable materials like ceramic and stainless steel, all sourced and manufactured in the EU, the product is built to last and withstand frequent use. The reparable, modular design also ensures that any worn-out parts can be replaced without discarding the entire system, reducing waste and aligning with circular design principles.
Since its launch, the Patella Crescenda has been met with positive feedback from users who appreciate how effortless it makes growing fresh supergreens at home. It has resonated particularly with individuals and families looking to reduce their reliance on store-bought produce, minimize food waste, and embrace more sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyles.
The impact has been tangible: users are not only growing their own food but also reducing their environmental footprint by cutting down on packaging waste, food miles, and unnecessary resource consumption. As the awareness of sustainable living continues to grow, we expect the Patella Crescenda to play a key role in making home-grown food accessible to an even broader audience in the future. -
How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
For Planet: The Patella Crescenda is designed with the planet in mind, encouraging sustainable living by allowing users to grow their own food in an eco-friendly way. By enabling the cultivation of microgreens without the need for soil or chemicals, the system minimizes resource consumption. Additionally, all components are made from durable, reparable materials such as ceramic and stainless steel, which are sourced and manufactured in the EU to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. This focus on reparability also ensures that the product has a longer life cycle, contributing to a circular economy and reducing waste.
For People: At its core, the Patella Crescenda empowers people to make sustainable choices easily and effectively. By growing fresh, nutritious supergreens at home, users can take control of their food production, reducing their reliance on store-bought produce. The system is designed to be user-friendly, even for individuals with little or no gardening experience. This makes it accessible for a wide range of people, from city dwellers with limited space to families looking for a fun and educational way to engage in sustainable practices. The ease of use, coupled with its potential to reduce food waste, supports healthier lifestyles and promotes self-sufficiency.
For Profit: The Patella Crescenda demonstrates that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand. By offering a product that is both reparable and built to last, we encourage repeat business in the form of replacement parts rather than entire product replacements. This aligns with the principles of a circular economy, where profitability comes not from continuous over-consumption but from thoughtful, long-term solutions. Additionally, the growing demand for sustainable products allows the Patella Crescenda to tap into a market of conscious consumers who are willing to invest in eco-friendly, durable goods that align with their values. -

Special Prize Question 1: "Empowering nature to create a new loop”: How does your work strengthen or support nature’s ability to capture and convert waste into valuable resources? How does your work advance industry practices by introducing nature-positive alternatives?
The Patella Crescenda strengthens nature’s ability to regenerate by facilitating a natural, low-impact method of growing microgreens—without the use of soil or synthetic chemicals. By empowering individuals to cultivate their own food year-round in small spaces, the system reduces reliance on traditional agricultural methods, which are often resource-intensive and disruptive to natural ecosystems.
At the heart of the Patella Crescenda is its capacity to minimize waste. By promoting a self-sufficient, soil-free growing method, users grow only what they need, significantly reducing food waste and lowering their environmental footprint. Additionally, the design of the system itself is nature-positive: it utilizes long-lasting materials such as ceramic and stainless steel, which can be repaired and replaced over time, keeping the product in use rather than ending up in a landfill. This aligns with circular economy principles, where products are designed to have a long life cycle and minimal environmental impact.
Beyond reducing waste, the Patella Crescenda actively encourages users to reconnect with nature. By engaging with the simple process of growing their own food, users are more likely to value natural resources, fostering a deeper understanding of nature’s regenerative potential. This connection to the natural world helps drive more conscious consumption habits, creating a positive feedback loop that benefits both people and the planet.
In terms of advancing industry practices, the Patella Crescenda serves as a model for circular design in the home goods sector. It offers a sustainable alternative to mass-produced products that rely on disposable materials, and it demonstrates how thoughtful, nature-inspired design can encourage sustainable living practices at scale. By reducing the need for large-scale agricultural resources and offering an easy-to-use solution for personal food production, the Patella Crescenda advances industry standards toward a nature-positive, waste-reducing future. -
Special Prize Question 2: “Regenerating ecosystems”: In what inspiring ways does your work contribute to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems?
The Patella Crescenda contributes to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems by encouraging individuals to engage in local, small-scale food production. By enabling users to grow microgreens in their own homes, this product reduces reliance on large-scale agriculture, which is often associated with deforestation, soil degradation, and excessive water use—all of which harm natural ecosystems.
One of the most direct ways the Patella Crescenda supports ecosystem regeneration is by fostering sustainable food practices that minimize waste. When users grow only what they need, there is less food waste, and fewer resources are required to produce, package, and transport food. This reduces the strain on agricultural ecosystems, allowing natural landscapes to regenerate without the pressure of over-cultivation.
The Patella Crescenda also promotes soil-free growing methods, which eliminates the need for harmful pesticides and fertilizers often used in traditional farming. These chemicals can leach into water systems, causing algae blooms and destabilizing aquatic ecosystems. By providing a clean, water-efficient method for growing nutrient-dense greens, the Patella Crescenda contributes to reducing chemical pollution and helping aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems recover.
Moreover, by using long-lasting materials and a reparable design, the Patella Crescenda reduces the need for frequent resource extraction, minimizing the environmental impact associated with raw material production. This, in turn, supports natural ecosystems by lowering the demand for mining and deforestation.
The product not only enables individuals to take part in more regenerative food practices but also educates and inspires them to adopt a more nature-conscious mindset in their everyday lives. As people reconnect with the process of growing food, they become more aware of the importance of protecting and restoring ecosystems, contributing to a broader cultural shift toward environmental stewardship. -
Special Prize Question 3: “Education and storytelling”: How does your work make complex bioeconomy concepts accessible and engaging?
The Patella Crescenda makes the complex concepts of the bioeconomy both accessible and engaging by integrating sustainability directly into daily life. At its core, this product allows people to grow microgreens at home with minimal resources, giving users firsthand experience in a closed-loop system that reflects bioeconomy principles. By simplifying sustainable food production, the Patella Crescenda helps users better understand the value of local, low-impact food systems in an engaging and practical way.
Growing microgreens at home encourages individuals to become more aware of how their food is produced, reducing reliance on industrial agricultural systems that are often resource-heavy and damaging to ecosystems. This direct connection to food production not only demystifies the process but also makes it personal and tangible. By seeing how small-scale food cultivation can reduce waste and resource consumption, users are empowered to take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle—without needing to fully grasp the complexities of bioeconomy theory.
Through its design, the Patella Crescenda embodies principles such as resource efficiency, circularity, and waste reduction. These concepts, which can often seem abstract, are brought to life as users watch their microgreens grow from seed to harvest in just a few days. The hands-on nature of the product makes it easy for people to visualize how minimal inputs can result in valuable, nutritious outputs—mirroring the way bioeconomy models turn waste into resources.
Additionally, the product’s reparable and modular design teaches users the value of durability and longevity. Instead of following a linear consumption model, the Patella Crescenda invites users to replace parts as needed, reinforcing the idea that products should be designed for repair and reuse, key elements of a circular bioeconomy. This simple yet effective approach to sustainability makes it easier for users to adopt and understand bioeconomy practices in a fun and engaging way.
