HOTAMET

HOTAMET is the World's First Helmet made of scallop shells. Scallops are the most eaten shellfish in Japan, and the most disposed shells. In Hokkaido's Sarufutsu Village where the country's largest scallops are caught, roughly 40,000 tons of shells are discarded on shore. These shells cause foul odor and generate heavy metal from its viscera remains, causing soil pollution. In such situations, we aimed to transform shells into new resources benefitting the local community. As a result, the usage of materials containing recycled shells led to cutting down CO2 emission by 36% compared to regular plastic, during the helmet's production process.
