Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
This work took inspiration from 'The Queen's Gambit', the groundbreaking NETFLIX series that set a record for the streaming platform since its premiere, created as an architect mindset the product embodies 'carpenter's distinctive brand DNA.
'Veerada' the founder and Creative Director of the brand 'carpenter has always had a passion for chess. It dates back to the days as a secondary school student when she joined the school's Thai Chess Club with her close friend.
After class, the two girls spent practically every evening playing chess in the Chess Club's room. Like the plot of the famous series, most of the club's members were boys because all the girls were more interested in joining the embroidery or traditional Thai music club.
Chess is a board game of long-standing history. Its origin can be traced back to 2,000 years ago. It was invented as a game that humans play to kill time and sharpen their brains, then it was later developed into computer games and eventually online games on mobile phones. Nevertheless, many are still drawn to the tactility and sounds when chess is played on an actual board.
One of the design's aesthetic appeals that specifically targets the architect clientele is the black / white colored board with details of wood grains that are obscurely visible. Each piece of WASTE WOOD left from furniture manufacturing process is arranged into grids and hatch with patterns taken from the two-dimensional drawings created in AutoCAD, architects most used software. It's the kind of a gimmick that most people will still love, whether they're an architect or not.
When not being played, ArchiTECT'S GAMBIT performs its deed as a stylish decorative tray that adds a touch of taste and character to any homeowner's personality. Taking the circular economy approach, the design preserves the economic and environmental value of waste wood by turning them into a lifestyle product, which is essentially what 'carpenter are all about and what we have been doing all along for 12 years to forward value creation to waste wood to ECO-minded people. -
How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
We combine creativity with the charm of carpentry and craftsmanship.
Beyond the Zero Waste concept, we want to raise awareness of the value of natural resources.
It's a sustainable way that we believe since established on 10.11.2012
We want to raise awareness of the value and need to conserve natural resources by producing eco-friendly lifestyle products upcycling from wood waste, in order to prevent further deforestation or cutting down of invaluable big trees. For 12 years, we have saved deforestation of more than a hundred big trees. This could be measured from the volume of the goods produced by 'carpenter.
We believe that our customers would be happy to be a part of the 'Sustainable Circular Economy', which leads them to bring positive changes in daily life and share their inspiration with others to save our 'only planet' together.
Because we believe that
"Saving the world starts with oneself". -

Special Prize Question 1: "Empowering nature to create a new loop”: How does your work strengthen or support nature’s ability to capture and convert waste into valuable resources? How does your work advance industry practices by introducing nature-positive alternatives?
One of the design's aesthetic appeals that specifically targets the architect clientele is the black / white colored board with details of wood grains that are obscurely visible. Each piece of WASTE WOOD left from furniture manufacturing process is arranged into grids and hatch with patterns taken from the two-dimensional drawings created in AutoCAD, architects most used software. It's the kind of a gimmick that most people will still love, whether they're an architect or not.
The gimmick of Checkmate lies in the incorporation of Bangkok's Skyline, where the silhouettes of skyscrapers' varying heights were used in design, upcycled from Scrap Wood. This process could help stop the burning. Which is one of the destructions of climate change. -
Special Prize Question 2: “Regenerating ecosystems”: In what inspiring ways does your work contribute to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems?
The story of 'carpenter begins at my family-owned, small wood factory, located on the outskirts of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. Our business manufactures and sells wooden frames, doors, and windows for more than 25 years.
Rewind to the past, there was one day when I went to the factory with my dad.
I saw a lot of scrap wood and sawdust scattered here and there.
I asked my dad..."What are we going to do with them next?"
He told me..."They will be sold as fuel to the farmers for 5 THB./sack.
For me, each piece of wood is so beautiful, with its uniqueness in texture, shape, and color.
And most importantly, it was part of a big tree! a large timber, which didn’t grow up in a few days, but many years as we could see from the annual rings.
Those are enough reasons for me to bring my idea to life, and value creation to the wasted wood through combining the art of carpentry with the eminent Thai handicrafts. -
Special Prize Question 3: “Education and storytelling”: How does your work make complex bioeconomy concepts accessible and engaging?
Many people remember the brand's stories. And spread the word of mouth until it became a viral trend in a short time. Both the whole story of the beginning and product design concepts become accepted and guaranteed with two awards, DEmark : Design Excellence Award 2021 and CDA : Creative Design Award 2022 that reflect the possibility and the potential to continuously create endless value.
This product was once exhibited in Milan Design Week in Italy, Maison Objet Paris in France, and Chiang Mai Design Week in Thailand. Moreover, it was broadcast on Thai television to present our Go Green ideas as well.
