Detailed explanation of the submitted project or idea (in English or both English and your language)
The idea for Na Chiao began with a simple observation: what if materials discarded by nature could be given new life? In Taiwan, Areca palm leaves are abundant but often discarded after harvest, left as waste. Seeing their unique texture and sturdy quality, we saw an opportunity to transform these natural resources into products that honor both tradition and sustainability. Na Chiao began with this mission—to create authentic, simple crafts rooted in Indigenous practices and ecological responsibility.
Since our journey started, the response has been both encouraging and humbling. Workshops in Taiwan and Japan have allowed us to share the process of working with Areca sheaths, showing participants how waste can become something beautiful, functional, and deeply connected to the Earth. For many, seeing a leaf turn into a durable and attractive product is an inspiring experience, sparking a dialogue about sustainable materials and a simpler approach to craft.
Looking ahead, we hope Na Chiao continues to inspire more people to reconnect with nature and rethink the value of everyday materials. By staying true to our approach—crafting simple, nature-inspired designs—we aim to promote a mindset that respects both cultural heritage and environmental balance. Our work is a reminder that sustainability can be achieved through small, conscious choices, and that these choices can bring us closer to the world around us. In the future, we look forward to finding new ways to contribute to the sustainable craft community and to expand the reach of our story and mission. -
How does your work address the 3 P’s (for Planet, for People, for Profit) for Sustainability?
Sustainability is central to our work, integrating the needs of the planet, community, and responsible growth. By transforming Areca leaf sheaths—natural byproducts often discarded—into durable, biodegradable products, we minimize environmental impact and embrace a circular approach to resource use. This process requires minimal energy and uses no harmful chemicals, demonstrating that eco-conscious choices can lead to high-quality craftsmanship.
In keeping with our community focus, we often engage local individuals to help collect natural materials like Areca sheaths. Though we are still a growing operation, these efforts build connections within the community and allow us to source responsibly while supporting the local economy. Through workshops, we also share sustainable practices and promote appreciation for natural materials, encouraging people to reconnect with nature and embrace environmental responsibility.
Our business model is designed to align profitability with our mission, reinvesting proceeds to expand sustainable practices. By prioritizing quality and integrity over mass production, we show that ethical choices and sustainable growth can go hand in hand. We believe that sustainability, rooted in respect for both the environment and people, builds a foundation for a resilient, meaningful future. -

Special Prize Question 1: "Empowering nature to create a new loop”: How does your work strengthen or support nature’s ability to capture and convert waste into valuable resources? How does your work advance industry practices by introducing nature-positive alternatives?
Our work is focused on creating sustainable solutions by reimagining natural waste materials and supporting regenerative cycles. Transforming Areca leaf sheaths—agricultural byproducts often discarded—into functional, biodegradable products, we help prevent waste while enriching the environment. These products return to the earth without leaving harmful residues, embracing natural decomposition cycles and demonstrating how nature’s resources can be utilized sustainably to meet modern needs.
This process aligns with nature-positive practices, as it relies on low-energy methods and avoids chemicals, allowing Areca sheaths to retain their natural qualities. Minimal intervention ensures that every stage of the product’s lifecycle, from sourcing to disposal, complements and respects the environment, fostering a circular design mindset within the industry.
By providing a sustainable alternative to non-degradable materials like plastic, our work promotes a shift in industry standards toward materials that are both functional and environmentally friendly. We hope to inspire others to explore similar approaches, integrating designs that harmonize with nature’s cycles. Our mission bridges traditional craftsmanship with sustainable practices, encouraging a broader industry movement toward eco-compatible materials that align with the planet’s ecosystems. -
Special Prize Question 2: “Regenerating ecosystems”: In what inspiring ways does your work contribute to the restoration and stabilization of natural ecosystems?
Our work actively supports ecosystem restoration by transforming Areca leaf sheaths from betel nut plantations into durable, biodegradable products. These sheaths, once discarded, are now repurposed into items that, with proper care, can last at least 3-5 years or even longer. When their lifecycle ends, they decompose naturally, enriching the soil and contributing to the health of local ecosystems. This approach not only reduces waste but also supports a natural cycle of renewal.
Working with local communities, we gather materials in a way that aligns with the natural cycles of the environment, creating a responsible supply chain. By incorporating eco-friendly materials into daily life, we aim to inspire others to embrace sustainable practices and foster a closer connection between people and the environment. -
Special Prize Question 3: “Education and storytelling”: How does your work make complex bioeconomy concepts accessible and engaging?
Our work brings complex bioeconomy concepts to life by focusing on storytelling and hands-on experiences that connect people with nature. By transforming Areca leaf sheaths—an abundant agricultural byproduct—into sustainable products, we demonstrate the principles of resource regeneration and circularity in a tangible way. Participants in our workshops can witness the entire process, from material collection to crafting, giving them a deeper understanding of how natural resources can be responsibly used and returned to the earth.
Through storytelling, we share the cultural and ecological significance of each product, linking traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainable practices. By focusing on materials like Areca sheaths, which would otherwise go to waste, we illustrate how respecting natural resources and cultural heritage can lead to more sustainable solutions. This approach simplifies bioeconomy concepts by framing them within familiar values like respect for the environment, responsible use of resources, and community involvement.
We aim to make bioeconomy principles relatable by connecting people to nature through simple, authentic products. Each item tells a story about balance, sustainability, and the importance of preserving both the earth and cultural traditions. By engaging people in a hands-on experience, we transform bioeconomy concepts into something accessible and inspiring, encouraging others to take small but impactful steps toward sustainability in their daily lives.
