Atmospheric Islands

Others
Japan's phone booths are vanishing, but the leftover network could become something new: small, weatherproof capsules across Tokyo where anyone can step in and shift their surroundings through light, temperature, air, mist, sound, and vibration. A booth can be a private retreat, a window onto a distant place, or a live line where two people in two booths share one atmosphere. Grounded in ongoing doctoral research, it turns forgotten infrastructure into a citywide network for pause and connection.

Atmospheric Islands - A phone booth retrofitted into an atmospheric capsule: light, temperature, air, mist, sound, and vibration combine to create a believable sense of another place, all inside the existing structure.

Atmospheric Islands - Thousands of existing phone booths across Tokyo, reimagined as one connected network, so two people in two different booths can share a single atmosphere.
