"How do we use the space in and around the university to communicate the importance of the 2019 Climate Strike and mobilize our students to join?" was the challenge proposed by the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The idea was to get students to come to The Hague on Sept 27 to support the climate strike, but during our research we learned that many of the students knew nothing about the strike, or about sustainablity at all. Many of them said they would like to support the cause, but that striking would be "one step too far" and that striking is "not really their thing". We also felt that people were uncomfortable talking about the subject.
For those reasons, we wanted to come up with a way to make the conversation more relaxed and inviting. Playing with the word STRIKE, we started thinking about sports metaphors, such as striking the pins on a bowling game. From there, we decided to create a bowling alley, that would be installed in a crowded area of the campus. By interacting with it, people get more information on the strike, why it is important and what they can do to support it - this information is displayed in the environment around the alley. That way, they're being informed on an important issue while having fun and creating conversations about the subject. Our prototype was built using materials sourced from garbage bins in the campus and consists on three "bowling pins", a ball and a wooden board engraved with some key facts about the strike. We also put some of the strike's official posters on the board and on the "alley" itself.
