This is a piece about a slave who are running away and get caught in the market, the fear expression on his face was made to emphasize the terror of being captured. Another thing about the "terror" feel is the placement of the slave in the deep of cast shadow from the tend and from the soldier in the foreground. It has a lot of contrast compared to the rest of the market which has a lot of light value. Placement of the sword was made to separate the main character from the rest of the other element.
