Call for entries: Design ideas for products made using leftover material from the frames of eyeglasses
JINS is an eyewear brand with a philosophy of pursuing the “novel and natural.”
Their simple and reasonable pricing, frames designed to fit the Japanese face, and wide range of color variations have won them support from a broad fan base seeking eyewear they can trust. JINS has also produced original hit products that put a whole new spin on the image of glasses and eyewear, including Air Frame(R), designed to give glasses a light feel when worn, and JINS PC(R), which protects the eyes from blue light emitted by computers and other devices.
The JINS production process also leaves behind something “wasted” in the form of leftover fragments of resin produced when a lens frame is cut from a single sheet of resin. These leftover resin pieces are easy to work and come in a great variety of color variations, but not having any apparent use, they have always simply been discarded, on the order of roughly 4,000,000 per year. Could the ideas of creators be used to give these leftover acrylic pieces new life as amazing products?
For vol. 4 of the 10,000 Creators Meet PASS THE BATON project, we are inviting submissions of ideas and design images for new products made using JINS leftover acrylic pieces in an open competition format.
The winning idea will be transformed into a product through collaboration with KIGI and PASS THE BATON, to be sold at the PASS THE BATON web shop and store.
Design requirements and hints
1)Resin fragment size
Approximately 6mm
As leftover fragments, they are a little smaller than the inner rim of the eyeglass frames sold by JINS.
2)Wide range of color variations
Your designs can make the most of the wide variety of resin fragments, which includes beautifully colored fragments, tortoiseshell and translucent fragments, and fragments with different materials on each side. However, because the fragments will vary depending on product availability, specific colors cannot be specified.
3)Resin fragment material
The resin fragments are made from a material known as acetate. It does not melt; however, it will deform easily if exposed to a temperature of around 80ºC. Because acetate is an acrylic resin, it can be easily bonded or cut.
4) Mill image
You can download the milling material images that can be used as a reference when creating ideas. * Please refrain from use for purposes other than those submitted for “10,000 Creator Meets PASS THE BATON”. ・ JINS Edge Material Outline Image (PDF) ・ Edge Material Image (JPG)

About this project
“10,000 Creators Meet PASS THE BATON” is a project which examines sustainable creation and is being conducted through a collaboration between the “PASS THE BATON” select thrift store and “Loftwork.com”. The project aims to make attractive products out of used goods and inventory from various manufacturers, and is being conducted under the concept of “NEW RECYCLE”.
Through four projects, we are holding an online contest for design ideas for changing grade B products and dead stock into “nice products”. We aim to produce the products for real through a collaboration between PASS THE BATON and art directors.
*We are using an open format competition in which submitted designs will be published in real time.
