Hikikomori: Hermits of the modern society

Others
"Hikikomori: Hermits of modern society." is a project which deals with the socially withdrawn individuals in Japan, also known as 'Hikikomori.' This phenomenon may be a consequence of extreme mental pressure and fear of shame in the forms of meeting parental/societal expectations, some aspects of Japanese society known to be relatively conformist, guilt, bullying, and so on. Individuals facing this condition can fear reality and find comfort in their rooms. They could lock themselves up in there for decades and engage in recreational activities such as online gaming, watching anime, reading mangas, and many more as a distraction from confronting their real issues.
The product developed in this project is a wearable for the Hikikomori that exaggerates their lifestyle choices and prevents them from using distractions to escape reality. It is locked on them to provide an uncomfortable experience that brings out the absurdity of the condition. The suit may create a compulsion in the wearer to recuperate from their condition after quitting the test. The discomfort is achived through amplify sound, restrict oral movements, blur vision, and included built-in tanks that hold liquified food, water, feces, and urine.

The project may also act as an eye-opener for others who might begin to suffer the same and invoking consciousness to communicate their issues rather than escaping from it.

This product resides within a design fiction where the Japanese government decides to treat Hikikomori to include them in the workforce after suffering a worker shortage.

They use the suit as a test to check the resistance of a hikikomori and identify the treatable ones. The government locks the Hikikomori in the suit and monitors them.

Hikikomori are left in the suit for one-three months, depending on the duration they have been socially withdrawn.

The suit exaggerates a hikikomori's lifestyle and eliminates distractions to provide an uncomfortable experience that brings out the absurdity of their choices.

The uncomfortable experience may initiate the compulsion to recuperate from their condition after quitting the test. The Hikikomori who fail to wear the suit for the assigned duration are provided with additional treatment and prepared to be workers ready to be employed.
