Debris is a simple game created with Processing and poses environmental questions on digital ecology, electronics production and the exponential growth of e-waste. Through the game playing, it aims to grasp the post-digital condition of a contemporary life influenced, monitored, predicted and manipulated by algorithms that are coded by humans who follow corporate and capitalist ends. A contemporary life mediated through digital technologies which are manufactured by cheap labour, and produced from raw materials mined from the earth by child labor and workers’ exploitation. These technologies are black boxed designed with planned obsolescence and quickly become obsolete and discarded by its consumers who do not have the power to repair or modify the media gadgets. These devices end up back to earth where they become hazardous to the environment shipped to places around China and Africa, where piles of e-waste are stacked and hardware harvested for its several components by workers subjected to poor conditions. Lastly, to afford to run cloud computing and the digital sphere, the exponential growth of data centers do not run on green energies and leave a great material impact of carbon footprint on the environment. In this way, Debris attempts to raise awareness of electronics manufacturing, production, consumption, and its planned obsolescence inherent to electronics and digital media devices.
