Please describe the concept of your artwork in 1000 words.
Prestidigitation is the art of making objects or people appear and disappear with your hands. According to this definition, everything -including history- that one constructs and destroys manually without others seeing the process could be understood as such. This idea led me to think of local examples. According to Peruvian historians (and Chileans too), the bronze lions located in the Providencia commune, in Santiago, are war trophies from the Pacific War. However, another version is that the Lyon family from Chile donated the lions to the city.
For "Conjuror Tigers" I registered how I symbolically took the lion sculptures, removed them and gave them back to peruvians after flying to Lima. I produced this project during October, 2019 during Chilean revolts to change our Constitution, created during the Pinochet dictatorship. Altering public sculptures has been a way of editing history here and in other countries that are living a similar process of revealing against imposed politics. -
