Please describe the concept of your artwork in 1000 words.
This project documents the emergence of a fictional movement creating a new lifestyle. “Lazy-culture” is the activist group at the origin of the "Hibernation Community". It promotes laziness as a way to reduce our impact on the environment through hibernation. This is inspired by a Russian practice described by the British Medical Journal, which disappeared over a hundred years ago and was called “Lotska”. These people used to survive resource limitations through winter by waking only once a day to eat and hydrate. Until today, successful people were considered to be a hard worker and unstoppable energy spender. Now we have to face the collapse of ecosystems, climate change and many other threats. We need to change our values, to redefine what “success” is and to drive our behavior to survive these great changes.
The ‘Hibernation Community’ adopt a lifestyle organized around energy saving and 14 hours of hibernation per day. In today's context of a global crisis and looking at the auto-destructive impact of society, these people make everything to reduce even the time they spend awaken to minimize their carbon footprint. The community members learn over precise rituals to reconnect with their bodies and lower their metabolism to the strictly necessary. Thus, they evolve progressively from the hyperactive state to calm and psychic awareness before hibernation.
This project should lead to the creation of a video documentary about this community. The end is to immerse the public into their ‘reality’, to challenge society norms and reflect on our everyday choices. -
