Under the epidemic, face-to-face campus life is forced to stop. Even though, teachers and students can take classes through video. But, it is unfortunate that only video courses are available for elementary school students who are "learning group life" and “emphasizing five sense teaching."
Therefore, our design attempts to move the indoor campus to the outdoors, and create a more open, flexible, and safe learning space for children through the detachable and vertically lift able tent, and redefine the possibility of learning and contact.
However, the epidemic restricts indoor activities. Outdoors and green spaces are more precious under the epidemic. When we were designing this temporary school in the future, we first thought about whether we can try for more space from the water and sky?
We decided to try to create an experimental classroom that allows elementary
School students to study at ease and get close to nature without sacrificing
outdoor space.
The United States is the most severe country in the world with covid-19. So we choose the base of the experimental classroom is located in the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir which is the biggest water area in New York’s Central Park. This water area occupies one-eighth of the area of the park, but the utilization rate is extremely low.
When the children return to campus, they will walk through the park with biodiversity and re-experience nature. Finally, they will see the floating classroom from 50 meters offshore. Besides, the water surface could create diverse play spaces, such as boating, swimming, underwater plant observation, etc.
The floating classroom consists of 4 light, and cold-resistant tents. For use in all seasons, the main material of the tents is ETFE film. ETFE is durable, highly transparent, and lightweight in comparison to other structures. When ETFE film is used in the two or three-layer model it can be a great source of insulation for the inside of the structure.
Each tent is towed by balloons to adjust the airflow by lifting and lowering. It will also respond to the epidemic changes quickly in the future. When the coronavirus dies down, the balloon will rise to the highest point and the vertical space of the classroom will increase, which becomes a challenge for children to climb. It is not only a game but also a scene of urban rehabilitation. -

The following diagrams illustrate how energy transmission through an ETFE film (transmission, reflection and absorp- tion) can be modified. Application of reflective frit to inflat- able films; the three-layer model can be in an open or closed position allowing heat and daylight into the inner space. -
