地元の人たちにとって「建築家」は本当に必要なのだろうかと真剣に考えていました。

建築家は友達や親戚、建築雑誌、プロデュース会社と組んで仕事を受注するという構図が成り立っていて、ほとんどが地元の外に出て郊外や海外に出て仕事しているのが現状としてあります。建築家と地域とのつながりがない現状に対して何かアクションを起こせないだろうかというところからスタートしました。

さいしょに「地域から始まる建築」を地元の杉並を舞台に作れないかと考えました。建築展やまちづくりを行った経緯は地元の建築家と地域の人たちとつなげるために開催しました。５年に渡る活動を通して、建築、まちづくり、建築プロデュースという構図ができ、現在では１０数件の案件を地元の建築家で協業という形で実践と活動を行っています。

コロナ下では杉並区の商店街での飲食店の屋外テラス席の提案と設置、高円寺商店街のビルの活用、杉並区役所内での建築・まちづくり展・提案型のワークショップを通して「地域から始まる建築」についての議論などを通して具体的な方法論を実践してきました。

I was seriously wondering if "architects" were really necessary for the local people.

If you think about commissioning a house in the city center, the real estate price is too high at 50 million, and if you include the building, the construction cost is almost 25 million, so you can't build a custom house, so the composition is to buy a ready-built house rather than ask an architect. In addition, most high-income earners with annual incomes of 10 million or more usually ask major house builders for advice on custom houses. In urban planning, the city planning department of the government or the train station will commission an organized design firm.

Architects are still working with friends, relatives, architectural magazines, and production companies to get orders, and most of them are working outside of their hometowns in the suburbs or overseas. We started by asking ourselves if we could take some action to address the current lack of connection between architects and the local community.

So, we thought that we could create "architecture that starts from the community" in our hometown of Suginami. Through our activities over the past five years, we have developed a framework of architecture, community development, and architectural production, and we are currently working with local architects on more than ten projects.

Under Corona, we have proposed and installed outdoor terrace seating for restaurants in a shopping district in Suginami Ward, utilized a building in the Koenji shopping district, and discussed "architecture starting from the community" through an architecture and community development exhibition and proposal-type workshop in the Suginami Ward Office.

The exhibition will be held under the JR elevated railway tracks, a street that is familiar to the local people. We plan to open up the exhibition space to the people who usually come and go for work and daily life.

In addition, four local residents and a tutor will work together in ten groups.
We will have a workshop to discuss the requests from the Suginami ward assembly and local residents, such as a rest space in Ogikubo shopping street, use of the rooftop of Ogikubo department store, use of the roof of Koenji Pal shopping street, etc. We will make a presentation over two days and make a proposal to the ward assembly.
